Whats with breeding to golden hackled blacks? What is that done for?

That is to produce the darker chest and underfluff. Those words of wisdom came from George Mihalik when I was first looking for my first partridge Silkies. It actually works out very well, except I need to incorporate a better redneck (I just love that term).

Yep. I think you are misunderstanding me. I have the redneck to help produce that black chest and underfluff. That's what I'm doing. So many of the partridge boys just don't have it and the redneck is supposed to help correct that.

Well, from what I understand, the blacks that bleed through have partridge in their background. I'm not really sure but I would think that it would increase the percentages of blacks that you get in a hatch. Even as it is, I get almost 40 percent blacks and the boys are all rednecks... I'm sorry. I can't help myself with that term... That's why I have it on my profile with my avatar. LOL
But to be quite honest... I really know nothing. I have done what people have told me to do and the results have been, for the most part, outstanding. It has been such a great learning experience and I have met some absolutely awesome people that I am proud to call friends.
I do not know genetics AT ALL. I just know what seems to be working for me and will continue to do so.... It would be foolish for me to really experiment too much because I have a very small barn and not a lot of access to places to sell the birds. I am so far out in the middle of nowhere there's not a stop light in the COUNTY!!!

Double mating likely means breeeding separate male and female lines. Females that are too dark often help produce darker boys, while the more golden boys tend to rpoduce better girls. At least that is the thought.

You have to distinguish exactly what is meant by partridge in their background. Most silkies, regardless of variety are e^b based. This base is called brown, partridge or asiatic partridge. Add a copy or two of the pattern gene (Pg) and you will get penciling. Pg does not show up on E or E^R bases; it is essentially hidden. It takes a lot more melanizers to cover ground colour areas on non E or E^R birds. Any can have leaky hackles, but the e^b birds are more likely to.
