Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Years ago we hauled a pony in the back of a uhaul, from Kansas to California. We stopped every few hours and opened the door to refresh the air. It was very cool temperatures and she did fine.

The best I could come up with is in crates, cages, carriers in the van with DH because I don't think the uhaul will allow enough ventilation for them. I will drive the car with the dogs. One good thing, silkies are smaller and from what I read, you don't want to allow too much room either because of them possibly getting hurt but not packed too tightly so they overheat. We are making the trip at night so they will be normally asleep most of the way anyhow. It will be one smelly trip! LOL I think I will put all moms, babies and broodies in a large dog crate and try to pair up the rest of who gets along with who. My one roadblock is a leghorn with 2 chicks...she is bigger than the silkies so I am not sure if I want to put her with the standards or in with the silkie moms...I am leaning to a small carrier by herself with her chicks right now.

Unless the multiple mama hens and chicks have been mingling together, do NOT put them all in the same crate. Mama hens are likely to kill babies not their own.

If you can get wine boxes (for bottles, not the kind that actually contains wine), they are just about the right size for a silkie. Put a couple of inches of shavings in the bottom and top with a silkie. Tape several together is that makes it easier, and make a top with hardware cloth or cage wire or something similar. Put a mama with babies in a slightly larger box. I'd be really concerned about the eggs under a broody--way to likely to get bounced around.

Or other closed trailers. Weather can make a big difference, though.

Thanks! We are pulling a uhaul trailer, do they maybe leave the door cracked just a bit to have airflow? It would be nice and dark for them in there to keep them quiet and more relaxed I would think.???

Door needs to be CLOSED to keep the contents of the trailer inside rather than being dumped on the highway.

Thanks! What about milk crates??? I have a bunch of those here. Do you think they will be big enough? I have a few moms that have been together but have created this team to steal all chicks. They do not hurt other chicks but would rather keep all to themselves. LOL But there are some older chicks I am sure they would not like to have around them so I would keep those separate from the rest. Oh goodness! This will be a challenge!

Milk crates would work, but most won't hold in shavings. Maybe use the cardboard boxes I suggested and cover with milk crates? (assuming bottom is ventilated)

I know Hannah! Yes, getting older and need some warmer winters! LOL They are crazy and the one is the chick stealing mom!!! Broody as broody can be! LOL
 
NewToFarming, I live in mid/northern Georgia, about 3 hrs east of Atlanta and 30 mins west of GA/SC border. For about the past week (give or take maybe a day) the temps at night have been in the 40-50s. And weather.com says the low for the next 10 days should be an average of 55, with an average high of 78. Not sure where you're headed or what it's like further north or south, but I wouldn't think it'd be too big of a difference temp wise. We've been having some fairly nice days here
