Thanks Sonoran! Yeah Sundy and Bren, congrats!! Are you saying the judge thought Bren's paint was a self-blue?? Sheesh

Pennie, The Sedalia show was a (hope I get this right), Special and a District show. Still learning about shows here, wish I could've gone to this one, if for nothing else but to watch and learn and meet some Silkie folks. This is the closest APA show I have found near me, and it's a 3 hour drive one way. Would've been nothing in my younger years, but since my truck and I are getting on, it's a bit on the iffy/chancey side for me!

No, he first marked her self blue as AOV Champion. They were able to correct him that IT IS NOW A RECOGNISED VARIETY, and he changed the Champion AOV to one of her paints.

There were two separate shows with separate judges. In the special, Sundy's black pullet took reserve featherleg and one of Bren's lavenders (not sure if it was the same one or not) took Best AOV--they did not see it in time to get that judge to change it. In the District Show, Sundy won Grand Champion of the entire show--beating ALL the bantam and large fowl chickens, all the waterfowl, and all of whatever other birds were exhibited. This was where they caught that the lavender was judged AOV and were able to get it corrected.

If you read enough silkie threads, you will find that just about everyone finds that "variety X" is in very short supply--especially good quality birds. It really all depends on where you live. Some people rarely see good blacks, I see lots. Ditto with blues and splash. Partridge is probably one of the less common recognised varieties overall, but if you are in the right place, you will see them. Same with buffs--a few years ago buffs had the popularity that paint does now. Greys are probably the least common recognised variety, but I am seeing more grey breeders in the last year or two; ditto with partridge.

Also, the size of the show and its location make a difference. For the most part, larger shows attract more exhibitors, as do shows close to home.
