It sounds like many of you on this thread are interested in the idea of "reincarnation". If you really want to learn the idea and understand its history you need to look into its Hindu past. In Hindu society there was a caste system made up of different members of society. Ex: Priests, craftsman, scholars, laborers and lastly the untouchables. This caste system has gone on for thousands of years in India. The main idea is how you live your life determines what caste you will be in in the next life(kharma and darma). Whatever caste you are born into is the one you stay in your whole life, there is no change. Only after death and reincarnation. The idea of reincarnation and past lives and the way it is thought about in Wester society is very much a "modernization" of this concept without all of the unpleasantries that are associated with it from its Hindu past.
A last note is about the Untouchables or dalits of the caste system. They are the lowest of what you can be reincarnated and are treated as such in Hindu society. They do the unpleasant tasks of society(even to this day). Under Hindu laws and beliefs they are not actually considered human and any punishment you give upon them is deserved because of how horrible they have been in past lives to become an untouchable.
Just some info for you. If you are really interested, look up some information about what it really is.
