So today, almost all of our chicks got a pasty butt. We used coconut oil, warm water, and a washcloth to clean it off but I heard people have different techniques so what do you do when your birds get a pasty butt? What should we try to get rid of it because I am afraid we might lose them if we don't do anything! Please help.

So i am still super new, so keep that in mind. We washed ours with warm water and a qtip amd then a decent dollop of vaseline. Seems to have cleared it right up.

I picked up Probios (they LOVE the taste) and apple cider vinegar at TSC. I add the ACV to their water for 12 hours on and 12 hours off and give them the Probios once a day for them to eat off my hand. It cleared my chicks with it right up. I only had to re-wash one of them after the first day. I still give it to them to keep them healthy and have had no further problems.

This was recommended to me as well, the probiotic. So Probios is the brand? Have to brave the pandemic for more feed so i thought id go check out tsc for that too.

I kept a humidifier in the room they were in and tried to make sure they were not too hot, and only about half my chicks got PB. I cleaned them off as soon as I saw it developing with a little Dawn dish soap in the bathroom sink and gloved hands. Checked them daily. Each day there were fewer that needed cleaned. I gave probiotic water too, every other day, providing two waterers so they had a choice. No ACV, I just don't believe in it.

Yes, you can find it in the equine section. It’s for all species. It’s not a big container, so I bring wipes with me and wipe down everything I bring home, haha.

I've heard that the chicks becoming a bit too warm or hot can contribute to pasty butt. I think the probiotics could help a bit. Just keep an eye, and try to massage out the pool with warm water.
Most feed stores, like tractor supply, carry probiotics for chicks. You can use save-a-chick, or even rooster booster. It goes into their water.

What kind of heat source are you using? If a heat lamp, what's the temperature in the brooder under the lamp, as well as away from the lamp?

Pasty butt can possibly be caused by the brooder being too hot, so if all of them have it, my inclination would be to reduce the temperature in there.
