Hi there! We just brought home 4 chicks! 2 of them looked to have some pasty butt. My husband pulled it off, not knowing that wasn’t the correct way to get it off ( we have since read articles about putting them under warm water!) one of them had a little blood after we did this, and doesn’t look like she feels well! Should we put some peroxide on her behind? Or Vaseline? Any suggestions are appreciated as we did not mean to hurt the baby!!

I use a warm cloth until the poop gets soft, a trickle of warm water can do the same. Vaseline on their bum will prevent anything from sticking. Pasty butt usually goes away but keep an eye on it. It can become so built up that it blocks the vent.
Good luck!

Next time you see a pasty butt, DON'T just pull it off! The chick's vent is extremely delicate, and you likely tore off some valuable skin (it's like peeling off a really-important, not-yet-ready scab!)

I understand why you did though, I'm glad you tried to help it! You always want to soak its bum and gently rub the pastiness off with a Q-Tip. Never, ever do it dry. We all make mistakes our first round.

I would just keep that area squeaky clean. If you have any antibacterial ointment (without pain killers) then dab a little on the area. Anyone else have ideas?

Thanks so much! We were going to do peroxide? You think that would work to keep the area clean? I appreciate the advice!

Thank you so much for the advice! Next time we will know the right steps to take!

Personally, I think that peroxide would be too harsh/drying. However, I've never tried it. If you have any ointment like the kind I said above, that would be best. That, and some vasoline.

Is there anyone who's tried peroxide on their chicks and could give some advice?

I will find some antibacterial cream. Thanks again! Let me know if anyone has tried peroxide!
