I have one little chick that has poo on the feathers/bottom of vent. It's not blocking the vent but I cannot get it off with just water and qtips. She squeals like I'm hurting her, when I try to let it soak for a minute to loosen it. IS there anything else I can try? Do I have to remove it? Thanks in advance!

This is what I do. Take one chick with HARD crusty poo stuck to butt. Take one Q-tip and one cup warm water. Dip Q-tip into water so you have a soaked Q-tip that drips warm water. Gently rub wet end of Q-tip on HARD crusty poo. Do this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and the HARD crusty poo will turn soft and come off.

I remove pasty poohs when I see them so they don't build up and block the vent. I fill a coffee cup with an inch or two of warm water and then add the chick. I let the chick sit for a minute or two (sometimes I loosely cover the top with my fingers, otherwise some will jump out) and then i remove the chick and using a paper towel I pink the pooh to get it to break up, then it usually slides right off. Just did this last night with three or four chicks and it looks like I'll have to do it again tonight

I call it the Chick Spa. They protest for a bit, but once they're in the warm water they calm down. Dry them with a dry towel and back to the brooder they go.

I keep a small, very sharp scissors by my brooder box. When I see pasty butt I very gently cut the pasty down off. Hold the chick over the brooder so it can see the others. Had one last spring that got pasty quite a bit. He ended up with a bald butt after a while, LOL but it kept his butt clean !!
