TEXTING spelling - err, display of letters to indicate words or thoughts, 'cause it sure ain't spelling - makes me grind my teeth in annoyance. MAJOR annoyance. I can type at a keyboard fast enough to spell out whole words and use punctuation, which I think should be used in discussion forums. I understand if one is using a phone keypad to spell things, there would be shortcuts taken to save time in looking for all the right number keys with their 3 letter options, but how often is that done in a discussion forum such as this?

I do know I chose a particular seller on eBay over another offering the same product because the description of the seller's packaging, shipping procedures included "You will receive an accurate invoice, description of the item(s), subtotal and shipping costs with no misspellings or improper upper or lower case letters."

Obviously something that bugged the seller a lot, and with which I had great empathy.

Several years ago, I "invented" an Instant Messaging abbreviation: LSHIPMP. Can you guess? The context relates to something EXTREMELY funny.

No idea what "LMHIPMP" means but I thought "LSMFT" when I saw it.

And you are absolutely right about the spelling. People have an entire keyboard to type in when at a computer, so the only reason I can see for using "texting" language is that the person can *not* spell due to always using that instead of real English.

I hate the LOL but have found that when you are being sarcastic or funny it sometimes does not translate in our typed discussions and people can't tell your being funny ( Maybe Im not funny) or making a non serious comment and I have been called out on it so I always try to remember to use LOL so that everyone knows I am joking.

I do the same but in my post above I was replying to comments about saying "lol" and so forth out loud while speaking face to face.

The first time I heard someone actually pronouncing "ELL Oh ELL" in a conversation about which the speaker was being snide, it took my brain a few seconds to suss it out. Just when did "laugh out loud" transmogrify into sarcasm??

Since when did anybody think it was perfectly understandable to SAY/pronounce emotional abbreviations, letter by letter OR as a word? Ell oh ell, Lawl, or lahl, that would be as stupid as me trying to say, "Oh emm jee!" or "Ahhmg."

Sorry Galanie,

I wasn't commenting on a specific post, I was making my own observation. It seems we our so involved in our digital world as a society that we forget how to actually converse in real life. I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere but make myself go to town once a week and sell eggs at the farmers market. It is my "be social and people watching day". My husband said I was turning into a hermit. I havn't used text speach out loud and don't plan to. There are so many fabulous words in the english language that we rarely use any more, its a shame to use abbreviations to replace the most commonly used ones.

As for the abbreviations- any chance we can add OE to the list? (Olive Egger) I've been using it for months, not sure if it's sanctioned!

This is the strangest place to find a thread ranting about laughing out loud...
