Pea Eggs Scheduled to Hatch?

You should see movement in the air sac if it is ready to hatch, i would not try to help it till it pips and has been piped at least 14 hours, never turns out good for me.

I just candled it and it doesn't look like it's internally pipped - but I've never seen one internally pipped before so, I could just be missing it, from what pictures I've seen though it looks like it'd be pretty obvious.

Since Muppet hatched a while ago and now you see no movement in that one egg, I think you have nothing to lose by going in and hatching the chick yourself. It might not end well but obviously it's not going to hatch itself if the egg was moving around before and now you see no movement. I hatched out one that pipped and he survived. I also hatched one that didn't pip after 24 hrs (he had pipped internally) so I took him out of the egg. He seemed okay but passed quickly. Just something to think about. I say give it a shot.

Muppet and this one were incubated in different incubators (didn't have enough room in one bator for the original 20 eggs), both set at the same temp but one or both must be a little off. They both had additional thermo/hygrometers, so I don't know what happened, but oh well.
I did punch a small hole in the top (air sac end) to see if I could see movement that way or a beak sticking through, but I didn't. I'm not sure how confident I would be about hatching it myself. I can try, but I just don't want to mess anything up in case it's just being slow..

Here's a couple pics of Mupps in his/her new home, sleepin.

Do your peas sleep on their sides? Seems like it'd be comfortable to be able to stretch those big legs out.

And if that other one doesn't hatch, I'm heading up to Peak 2 Peak Ranch tomorrow to pick up a dozen eggs and I'll just have to come home with a couple of babies, I guess. :)

Didn't know they were in different incubators. I did it by peeling back the shell until I found the beak, which was already pipped. For unknown reasons it wasn't hatching on par with the others. I did it under warm running water. It hatched out and acted perfectly normal but passed. (I had to spend 3 hrs away and left them under a 75 watt heat lamp that read 103 under it when I got back. The others were moved away from it but he hadn't moved. I really think he would have made it if it had the strength to get away from the heat.)

I did the same to one that had pipped the shell and he is fine. (His name is Chance)

They were both screaming to get out of the shell, it was a definite distress call that I didn't hear in the first 2 hatching.

I don't want to give wrong information but if it's been in the shell that long and nothing is progressing, I personally would intervene. Good luck!

This is what the one looked like. He was shrink-wrapped. He hatched out kicking but like I said, I think he passed b/c he got too hot from the heat lamp and couldn't wiggle away.

This is Chance right after I got him out...he is big now. Again, I am NO expert but this is from my experience.

Wishing you luck!

Looks like the little Bronze is all I'm getting from this batch. Little BP must've passed yesterday or today, the little guy was fully formed. I didn't take him all the way out of the shell, but what I did was moisten down the air sac membrane so I could see through, and the poor thing was just still.
I candled the rest of them just for good measure (was not confident they were going to hatch going into lockdown - no movement, no veins), and they all look the same, not fully dark in the shell area.

Looks like I'll bring some new babies home tomorrow, anyhow.

I am still happy about my one and only, though. :) I think I'll get better hatch rates with local eggs that don't have to go through 2 days of shipping and hot delivery trucks. New hatch date will be August 11th if I'm setting tomorrow.

Peafowl eggs were never meant to be shipped. I know a reputable breeder nearby who will NOT ship eggs because of everything involved.

It's totally different for chickens, I don't know why, but shipped peafowl eggs have the odds against them from the day they are wrapped for shipping.
August 11th will be an exciting day for you.

Hopefully you can put them under a setting hen for the first 10 days...Brad Legg's site even recommends that. It improved their odds drastically.

Good luck,

Nathan

I do think I will eventually try shipped eggs again. Sometimes you can't find the variety you'd like to have locally, and I'm always up for a challenge. :) It probably would've been best to start with local eggs, to figure out humidity/temp stuff, then try with more expensive eggs when I'm pretty sure I have it down. There are just so many factors with shipping that it's rare to get a great hatch, but I'm not going to stop trying! :)
Thanks! I can't wait already. :)
