Peachick male or female?

Hello. New here, but I have raised peafowl for almost 40 years now. I can tell you that it is a Black Shouldered Peafowl, but I cannot tell the sex at this age. It would need to be at least 2 months old before I could tell for sure. The males are identifiable by larger black areas on the upper back, while the females are more evenly mottled in appearance. If you post some more pictures a few weeks from now I can tell you. I hope you plan to get another one or more so that it will have some company. A solitary peafowl is a lonely bird.

With my blackshoulder spalding peachicks the males start getting black on their feathers when they are about one to two weeks old. In my oldest group of BS spaldings, the males have quite a bit of black while the hen is just starting to get a bit darker. I like BS peafowl since they can be sexed quite easily.

Hello and Thank You.

You have a lovely Black Shouldered Hen. They have always been great favorites of mine, with their unique coloring.

Welcome to BYC!

Thank You, Kathy. I am happy to be here. I actually came to this site looking for sources of Sumatra Chickens, and then coincidentally ran across the peafowl section. Who couldnt love peafowl ? Thanks again for the welcome.
