peacocks and thier voice!!!

They need some sort of shelter to get out of the rain, and the pen needs to be at least six feet high (higher is better) for the peacock to display. They like to roost high. It is best to have roosts under a shelter and ones outside of the shelter under the netting because they like to roost outside of the shelters most of the time. If it is cold or windy they might need a indoor place to escape the cold and/or wind.

My neighbor a few miles away bought peacocks this spring. They are so loud at anytime day or night! I don't mind it to much since its so far away, but when we have company someone usually asks me if our neighbor is beating there kids! I guess the screaching does kinda sound like kids screaming lol.

When I was a kid, I thought they were saying "Oh WOW!!! Oh WOW!!!"

I read somewhere that peacocks only get loud 1. when they are courting peahens and 2. when they are separated from their harem and can't see the peahens. Do y'all find this to be true?

I'd like to get peafowl, but am afraid that the cocks would just never shut up. I have ducks and geese, and they can be pretty "chatty" sometimes.

Peafowl mainly make all those loud calls durring the breeding season (Spring-Summer). The rest of the year they are pretty quiet. If you are worried about noise one peacock generally isn't very noisy. It is when you get to like ten peacocks that it might start to be a little too much. I really like the noise. Also if you get a young peacock they won't start making the loud "Ahhh ahhh" call until they are 3 so you will have two years of not much noise. It is always good to ask neighbors if they would be okay with peafowl noise. They like to call when we drive up a lot and mainly when they hear a strange noise but that is about it.

There are 2 wild peacocks that call mine then mine calls and it is just real noisy you cant really hear the wild ones unless they are near by but mine sure does get upset so I want to make him happy as possibly with 4-5 peahens. But I really dont want them to make to much noise...

Some peacocks like to call more than others, but once one peacock calls it can sometimes get all of them calling which is why it can get pretty loud if you have a few. Alto is just two so he doesn't have his really loud voice yet, but he makes a different loud "Hawww" call. He does this a few times a day sometimes and sometimes his calling gets at least one of the peahens calling, but it isn't really loud. The only time I don't like it is if you are in or very close to the pen and my three year old Dragon starts calling and you can't talk for a few seconds or a minute because he is so loud. They are never really annoyingly loud though. In fact some neighbors that live a block or so away wine about how they wish they could hear our peafowl from their house because they really want to hear their calls! All the neighbors just love the idea of having peafowl. It is fun visiting peafowl breeders. When you drive up all the peacocks start calling, but to me it isn't that noisy it is just exotic sounding when you hear a lot of them calling together.

It sounds like different peacocks have their own habits when it comes to how frequently they holler.

The same is true with chickens, guineas, turkeys and waterfowl. After a while, you can tell how much and when they'll make their various noises. My neighbors are great about my ducks, geese and chickens, and even my tom turkey, but getting a peacock might push the envelope! Maybe I'll just get peahens, though it doesn't seem quite right not to have at least one gorgeous male.

mine will not shut up!!! he even keeps my kids awake some times at night! in the off season somtimes he barks just like my dog!! and it makes my dog mad so it barks the first couple times it did this i thought there was a dog that was not mine out side but no it was just my peacock teaseing the dog. he can sound just like a cat too!!

If you just get peahens, you could get several varieties. I think blackshoulder peahens are pretty, and Spalding peahens can have some nice color for a peahen. You could have peahens for a while and then think about getting a peacock. I am sure you could just keep around one peacock and it would be fine and you could just sell the male peachicks to keep the noise level down.
