Good question... All birds were wormed just one day with Safeguard at 50mg/kg and treated with metronidazole at 50mg/kg for five days. Most recovered with that treatment, but a couple didn't recover until I added Baytril, so hard to say for sure what was ailing them. Wish I had kept better notes.

Hi There-

I'm new to this wonderful world of BYC folks and found you by searching for help with my 2 year old Peacock, (Percy) ~ He became seriously ill last Thursday and i was unable to find any help from any local vets, even those claiming to be avian specialists. Finding this particular thread has (hopefully) saved his life as he is finally starting to turn around and take fluids on his own and has been doing a fair amount of eating today.
The first thing i want to say is, "THANK-YOU", Kathy for your expertise and well documented treatment advise. I used your protocol above and it did turn out i had to add the Baytirl before he seemed to respond favorably.
My question is how many days on the Baytril, 3 or 5. I am getting conflicting information and so i decided to go to the source, as i credit you for probably saving this guys life.
No idea what in the world happened to him or how he got this sick, but so long as i can pull him back, it's all good~~ Any support would be appreciated ~ Thank-You!

Welcome to BYC! How many days has he been on Baytril?

For intestinal problems I have found that I usually give it for five days, sometimes longer. The problem with longer is that sometimes they will get a yeast infection, and the yeast infection needs to be treated with fluconazole or ketoconazole.

I'm right in the middle of watering, but when done I will reply again.

Anytime it's convenient and Thank-You ~ !

After giving an antibiotic for five days it is always a good idea to give the bird a pro-biotic.

Thanks, i appreciate the input and will for sure see that he gets some good pro-biotic.
We seemed to have turned the corner today. I'm cautiously optimistic. Concerning part is not knowing exactly what the cause was, but just grateful and relieved he's responded to treatment.

Glad he is getting better. Since he is responding to the Baytril it is very likely he had a bacterial infection, possibly E. Coli. How many days did you give metronidazole?
