Peafowl Pros!!!!

Dearest Deerman,
Forgive me, I failed to give all the other characteristics that I look for in a very young chick. The length of the legs was just one point.
I have thuroughly enjoyed this discussion, especially with you.
I should not write things in a hurry when talking to people who can take the contrary position and have intelligence and experience to back it up.

You mentioned that you can have your fouryear old grandson in a herd of peacocks and he is safe. I believe you said that they are not tame peafowl. Could you please talk to us more on this subject. It is fascinating to me, since children want to come see our Peafowl. I should give correct information when answering questions.

How many peafowl do you have?

I'm sure someone has asked you to write a book. I would like to see you do so. Or have you already ?

BabyLady, thanks for starting this interesting discussion. I wish your friend well and hope she gets just what she wants.

here is a pic of my grandson feeding the peafowl, over 60 peafowl in this flight pen..

I have only had one peacock get mean, he was raised by himself, and imprinted to people, super tame except during breeding season.

Now I have never raised the green. Been told they do get mean.

Tame is onething but be carefully not to let them imprint. OK if hand fed with other peachicks. That the trouble with raising lone chicks. I have a goose that was lone gosling , she really thinks I am her mate, even to the point she thinks I am going to take her place on the nest during the day...So my mean, tame peacock looks at me like another peacock, reason he wants to fight during breeding season.

I have 69 breeding peafowl, and that is down from over 100. Most are housed together except breeding season.

One warning I would like to bring up about "tame" peofowl. Once they get older those long legs are strong and powerful and the nails very sharp. I've got about an 8 inch scar on my stomach from holding a large male when worming. He kicked and opened me right up, you couldn't have made a cleaner cut if you used a razor blade. I tell people my wife did it.

Agree tame or not , make sure to hold those legs tight. Best to wear gloves, I also have a few scar from the nails and spurs.

Wearing a shirt would have helped me that time. The vote on me being stupid that day was 100%!

ITs funny how everyone has hand raised peafowl stories.. I dont... Ive always wanted to.. but never did... I would always raise the chicks, and then move them from pen to pen as they grew... I might try it next year.. The only bird I can hand feed, besides my turkeys, is a male lady amherst....
