peahen adopting us

maybe you can ask the neighbor if she is one of his if not I would think that she is now yours. Even if it is his peahen maybe he will let her stay with you since she obviously like it at your place.

I will check with the neighbor - It's like the cat that shows up for dinner and social time then goes over the fence and returns the next day- I don't hear any peacock bird calls in the area. Can peacocks be trained to stay in a yard or do they have to have a coop?

we have 4 peacocks on our proprety that belonged to the original owners... when the last renter moved out he left them locked in a too small pen.. the neighbor on the acre behind us let them out and started feeding them... the house was empty for 3-4 months.. so they got used to eating at his place.. but still came back here to roost on the roof...
when we moved in they stayed at his house mostly for a while, but have slowly started hanging here ab it more often.... and once we got our goats and our donkey they found the hay bales... omg... they love the hay bales.. lol.... i will even toss a little sweetfeed up on the bales for them they love that too.... they also eat the chicken feed.. and any greens i throw out for the chickens...
and for some reason they LOVE flaming hot cheetos... lol...

i don't consider these our peacocks, but i take care of them... i don't consider them belonging to the owners of the house either... or to the neighbor... they are just the peacocks.... the belong to themselves... lol... go ahead and try to tell them otherwise.. they'll put you in your place...

if you like having her around feed her... they'll go where the good food is....
if you haven't experienced mating season yet.. be ready for that.. if the boys come around they are obnoxiously loud.. lol.. but the mating dance is great to see.. the males feathers actually rattle when he dances....

just saw the question about the coop... mine are free-range.... a female doesn't need much coop space, but if you end up getting a male the coop has to be BIG to allow space for full tail feathers...
you might have trouble keeping this female in your yard, but if you make her comfortable she may make a nest in your yard next spring and if you can get the babies, or get the eggs and incubate the eggs... then the little ones will probly consider that home and find a place to make their roost...
i didn't know enough to save the babies this spring from the heat stroke.. we had just moved in the day after they were born and i didn't know anything about chicks yet or that they were only 1 day old... but i'm preparing for next spring so i can get the most out of the mating season.. and hopefully get a few that i can consider my own...

I kind of like the idea to enjoy the visiting peahen , feed her when she shows up. It does make it kind of fun to watch for her not knowing if & when she will show. I also would not mind if she nested in the spring , we have the room. We also travel a bit so when we are out of town ( at the peacock lounge) in Spokane. I can just leave out a little extra feed.. I also noticed an absence of the usual chicken hawks that hang around. Do you think the size of the peahen puts them off?

i had the same thing happen to me. i went to kentucky and my aunt went back to her house and called me and said there was a peacock on her porch. so now i have him and he has settled in nicely.
