Peas for Dummies. . . Questions

Java peafowl will be more expensive and are not recommended for a first time peafowl breeder for many reasons.

Here is the United Peafowl Association breeder listing page:

India blues are good starter breeds. They are the least expensive and that way if one runs away or something it won't be as big of a loss. Also India blues are the easiest to find.

You can always get some other kind to, but India blues will always normally be cheapest. For example you could get whites, blackshoulder, ect.

You could get Javas as a first peafowl, but they are a lot different and need more care then India blues. Also you really need to know what to look for so you don't get cheated when buying them because Spaldings (a hybrid of the blue and green) can sometimes look very similar to green peafowl. That is why it is good at least if you HAVE to have Javas or any kind of green peafowl that you spend time to research them.
Here is a page on green peafowl:

For a few varieties of peafowl with pictures and a short description this page is great:

It all depends on what you think you want and how much money you would spend.

Aww thanks! I am glad to give good advice, that way it makes things easier for first time peafowl keepers so they can get to the point were then they can give the same advice someday. If that makes sense...

We got our two cocks when they were a couple of months old. We have had a lot of fun watching them grow, and become more beautiful every day. They are now about 1.5 years old, but they have lots of color and will spread their tails for us any chance they get. They are entertaining, curious and funny. Still a little wary of people though, haven't gotten them to eat out of our hands yet, though they are used to us and follow us around.

i too am a newbie with peafowl. i was able to get 6 hatching eggs in a trade with another poultry lover like me. they are in the incubator now and i will be reading up on them as they grow. they are indian blue peachicks/fowl.
