"Peck and Play"Anybody try this for change of scenery during the day?

I've not tried that, and I agree, it is obviously not predator proof. (You can tell by just looking at it.) It looks as if a fox or something could easily flip it up or over.

I do recommend solar powered electric poultry netting. I don't recommend a certain brand, but if you were wondering we use the Premier netting. It's mobile so you can easily move it wherever you want your chickens to peck around at the grass and the bugs.

It's also predator proof, since it's electric. It will shock any predator that is not a flying predator if it touches the netting. It also gives the chickens much more room than the "Peck and Play" tunnel.

I do "chicken field trips" to the side yard with a metal dog playpen when the weather is nice and I'm able to supervise because as you noted, these things aren't predator proof and can be upturned easily if you don't secure them down (mine is unsecured). My chickens seemed to like it fine and it allowed them to get some fresh grass when the grass in their run was trying to grow back.

thanks! I think this sounds better than the 'peck and play'..at least a little sturdier. The more I think about it, the less I think I am not comfortable with just a nylon/mesh structure!

I'm thinking of using a large dog crate (the kind for crate training) as a movable tractor next summer so I can move them around for fresh grass etc. I know my 8x10 run will be devoid of grass etc.

I bought one of those puppy play yards that I move around for my chickens. It has panels and can fold away. Anyhow, I only use it when I'm home, that way the silkies get to graze. Also, I have an old sheet that I pin over the top of it to give them shade and also keep the birds of prey from noticing them. So I can move this playpen around the yard and the chickens really love it. (And I can put it away easily.)

I got one today. i put my 3 week old chicks in there while I'm gardening. Its great to get them outside while supervised. The chicks had fun.
