Anything else, yes... snakes are a protected species in TN... I ran into this when my fiance almost grabbed a timber rattler sunning on our wood... no joke...
Btw, I am not judging, just passing on info...

Yup... protected species... old law, but still in effect...

pulled it up on google read the law still okay we have one out here that if you drive at dusk someone needs to walk 10 feet in front of the car with a lantern go figure

OK I just called one of the local wildlife officials that lives down the road that I commonly talk to at one of our areas tag in stations. He said you can't actively go into their habitat with the intention to catch or harm any species of snake without a permit. But you can dispatch of a snake in your yard if the intention is to protect your livestock, pet or family. He noted you won't find one officer willing to cite you for that. The law is on the books to keep populations up and the illegal poaching for sells of meat, skins and live selling. Said he just busted 2 guys at a flea market trying to sell copperheads. Who the hell wants a copperhead as a pet? Lol

When we lived on Okinawa, home of a LOT of pit vipers, one of the guys in my hubby's office had several! There are crazy people everywhere!!! Mary

I wish that being a nuisance on our property was enough. On your private property, it's still just commen gardners and if it's within 50ft of your home then it extends to timber rattlers. It makes sense to us, since we very, vary rarely see a snake. I might see 1-2 snakes each year- usually gardners. I know we have black rat snakes though, as 14 yrs ago when I moved, we had a good idea 10 ft rat snake in the house when we moved in. So thankfull haven't seen any more since.

People who want to appear "tough" by showing their friends that they have something "dangerous"?
We have lots of snakes here, but I don't know how much of a nuisance they are for rural chicken owners, or what they do about them. I might ask my "chook farm guy" when next/if I see him.

I think you people are super heros!! Cause I'm telling you right now..I would probably drop dead right then and there of a heart attack if I saw something like that in my nest box, let alone grabbed it!

The only time I ever see snakes is in my backyard near or inside my Aviary's. I have a German shepherd trained to attack and kill snakes but to leave my Ducks alone. Though none of the snakes are Poisson near me that I know of. but when my big bad German shepherd sees a spider... He runs away. I can't say anything because I too.... run away with fear... HATE SPIDERS AND SNAKES! I found that spiders are attracted to my Aviary's because of the bugs.... BIG spiders too.... I swear I spill more feed than my Muscovy's do..

I found a large black snake in a nest one night who had three large lumps in its figure. They were FAKE eggs!!! Can you spell indigestion?

I was just thinking that! I just put a few fake dino toy eggs in the nest boxes. We do have large black snakes and prarie kingsnakes here too, but hopefully none get in the chicken house. I sometimes like to leave the big door during the day to air it out. I put a small flashlight on a nail by the door so I can look before reaching in. I'm more worried about spiders.
