I really doubt that it could have been a rat. A rat chews and would have a hard time doing that. I would check for 2-legged predators. Set up a hunting camera.

It would be better to learn to shoot a "real gun" so that you kill the animal right off. No need to make it suffer, as I'm sure the BB's do.
That said, I am not attacking you or judging.....just saying. Also, I learned to use a gun, and I sure am glad I did. got rid of a whole mess of varmintsaround here, and no more waiting for hubby or my nephew to do it.

Yea they work pretty well. They are just a 100.00 pair. they can get up to a couple thousand dollars for the good ones. these work decent though

That’s exactly how my dad cleans birds for cutting up quick. If they are worried about getting caught just breast meat and some legs would be much harder to prove stolen from you then a whole bird still feathered.

The economy is in the toilet, people are hungry, people with kids are hungry. I know myself that if my own children were that hungry there isn’t much I would do, no matter how hard to feed them, even taking a nice long walk in the dark at night. Also there are plenty of skumbag people that would send smaller kids into a coop or small space to steal.
