Dan, what duck breed would you recommend for a beginner? I'm hoping to get ducks within the next few months. I will be hatching my own.
I think pekins are good for beginners, they are kinda plain though but they lay pretty well and are big enough you can eat the extra drakes (if you want) I like the coloring of my blue swedes but I like the pekins personalities better, I really liked my Cayuga duck but a fox got herrunners are fun. Most ducks are really hardy, more so then chickens, I've never seen a sick duck and I had about 10 sick chickens last year.![]()
I've heard it said that after ducklings get about 2 months or so old you pretty much either have to kill it, or a predator has to kill or it's gotta be seriously sick for one to die cause they're just so hardy and I wholeheartedly agree with that.
Thanks!
I really want Cayugas (sorry about yours), and might get them first, but I also want other breeds eventually - like Runners and Pekins.
Do you know which are easier to incubate?
No problem.
I want more Cayugas too, she wasn't super friendly but she was gorgeous!I might get Ancona's later this year.![]()
I think mostly they're all about the same. (Except I've heard Muscovies are a bit difficult) I've got some pekin, pekin mixes and possibly blue Swede eggs in the bator, they've got 10 to lockdown.
Cool! Once I tried two Muscovy eggs, but the problem was they were a surprise and I already had chicken eggs in the bator. Staggered hatch...yeah, that didn't go so well. I lost them.![]()
What are the Pekins mixed with?
That stinks. I'd like to try Muscovies, those are my favorite.
They can be pekin x pekin, pekin x blue or black Swede or pekin x mallard. I don't really know what's all in my bator as I've got all my ducks together and I don't know if the blue Swede duck is laying yet but if she is then I could have some pure swedes in there as well.
Nice!
I like Muscovies too, but I don't know if I'll try them again since Muscovy crosses are (usually) sterile and I want a mixed flock.
How many ducks do you have?
Yep!
Ah, I've heard if you mix Muscovies with mallard derived breeds they usually form separate groups and prefer to mate with their own kind and not mix but I have no experience there.
I have 7 ducks and 4 drakes, I'd like to keep some ducks from my hatch as I want to try and sell duck eggs and last year the 6 ducks I had wasn't quite enough.
