My own light Sussex, back up plan eggs are now on day 18 and I just locked them down...only five because like 6 weren't even fertile! I think she played hard to get with the boys. And a couple just stopped developing. They are due on Thursday so if they hatch on time, they will be exactly one week younger than the shipped egg chicks. So excited!
so exciting!
My last hatch went really bad... I put in 70 eggs and only 21 hatched. I don't know what the issue was.... maybe I should have de-wormed them prior to taking eggs... maybe some other issue... but the hatches before had no issue. So go figure! It could have been the coccidia flaring up... so many things could have gone wrong.
I envy you for being able to breed when you feel like it. :th

Well, at the moment I just have the one Sussex hen, so it's only her eggs that I want to have chicks from. She has caught on to my taking her eggs so she is either hiding them or just not laying well at the moment, maybe due to the heat. I will be so glad when I get my flock sorted out. My plan is to only keep and breed pure Light Sussex and get rid of all the others. I can't find help at the moment to slaughter. All too busy, so I am thinking of doing two at a time, starting with the mix youngest cockerels, they should be easiest to do by myself.

this thread has been on strike again - I have not received any alerts.

we still have 37-38 celsius and it seems it will keep till the end of month. I don't know how my chickens cope with it.

I got a speckled sussex roo with a hen that was supposed to be the same breed but I realized she is a mottled leghorn (or whatever they call this egg laying hybrid). I must find a hen for my new boy, he is very handsome. he comes when I call him and I even picked him up. he is about 1 yo, maybe a few months more.

It's not just this thread... it happens all over the forum. Don't know why.

I don't need anything above 25°C ... my chickens prefer those temperature too. I don't know how I would cope with temps like that for such a long time... nor my chickens.

At the moment I am dealing with a chicken with an impacted crop. It happened suddenly.. at least as far as I can tell. It was very hard. I massaged it and tried for her to throw up. Nothing... it did not budge... Nothing moved. It felt like sand at the bottom. Poor thing! I gave her some coke last night to help loosen things up. It seemed to have helped some. Her crop is not as hard anymore. But she did not touch an apple I gave her thnking the acid might help with the coke. This morning I gave her water... massaged and made her throw up. At least something came out now! It looked slimy and maybe had some sand mixed in. No feed or gras... I was able to do that 3 times...and then gave her some more coke.
I'll keep you posted how things are going. After work this evening I will repeat. I hope I don't have to cull her... hope she hangs in there.

I hope your chicken pulls through. I would never had thought of using coke. It is not something I drink, so I wouldn't have it here to use. How do you get a chicken to drink it?
With a syringe... you open their beak and carefully put it in. Well.. coke is supposed to help unclog a drain... I read that in German forums and my also breeding neighbor told me. She said it worked for her chickens.
I just read here on byc about using coconut oil... and massaging... I might give that a try as well... also read using Dulcolax. Makes sense... I might hit the pharmacy this afternoon.

you can put som acv (apple cider vinegar) to water, 1 tbs to 2l of water so that she (and the other chikens) drink it all the time. after 7 days give them pure water. it helps many things, cocci, worms, bacteria, etc.

a few drops of olive oil with a syringe helps as well.

Thanks! I am not sure she is doing well. She won't eat (Ijust gave her a couple of kernels). There is no difference to this morning. Other that she was closing her eyes and let her head hang while I was holding her. She did perk up when I moved her and put her back in her cage.
I might have to cull her tomorrow morning. I will take my coconut oil with me.. I read here that it might help.

I also lost another chicken today. So not a good day at all today.

I had to cull the hen this morning. She was just sitting down anymore. Has not pooped the whole time she was in that cage. Closed her eyes sometimes... and felt warm. I know chickens are warm.. but she felt warmer. Her crop was hard again. I saw no point in putting her thru more treatment. :hit

I am sorry to hear that. I think I lost a chicken to something similar. She died out of the blue, so I sort of wanted to know why. So chopped of her dead head off, and there was this terrible smell and masses of green slimy goop in her throat area, that looked like grass. It was all a bit gross and I quickly disposed of her. Still don't know what exactly it was.
