Last hatch for this year. Can't believe it's over already. 17 chicks hatched. They got their Marek shots this morning. Unless I miscalculated or miscounted I have 106 chicks this year. Still quite a bit away from what I wanted to have. 150 of the wheaten ones and 20 of the white ones. But that's ok. I think I will be able to pick some nice ones. My blue group is totally promising! I am so glad to decited to add more eggs from them in the last round. I only got 4 but I am sure it was worth it.

I have a sick chicken. My Count Tell, she’s my first adult chicken that got really sick 😢

I’m afraid she’s going to die. Yesterday she was sick , was moving slowly, but still ate mealworms and sipped water. Her belly was a bit strange. Today her belly is really too thick and she is even more sick.
she doesn’t make any sounds. She ate just 4 mealworms and won’t drink.

She is in a cardboard box in the coop right now and doesn’t come out anymore.
I think its an internal problem. The other chickens are all okay but not as happy as usual. They probably know she’s sick and leave her be, except for stealing the goodies.

p.s. i wrote this in the afternoon. After diner I wondered to take her inside and checked again. She had passed away. I’m going to miss her jumping on the swing and begging for a mealworm or other treats.

sorry for your loss:hugs

I used to be devastated when chickens died. now I force myself to be positive and think it makes room for another chicken.

Yes. I did realise that I can hold on to these 3 chicks if these are all girls and , if the odds say otherwise , even one or 2 roosters to be if they are not too loud.

The seller of the eggs told me : “Bantam RIR roosters are not as loud as the Dutch roosters. And brothers always get along fine. These bantams are not an aggressive breed at all. “

This is here on the new today:
EDIBLE BUGS
Newcomer to the European menu: the mealworm. Now that the insect species has been officially approved for consumption, what is to be the largest "nursery" in the country is emerging in Zwolle (in the Netherlands).

:ya Almost time to buy & enjoy the chicken goodies in bug-burgers from the supermarket. (They do have a great taste).

I feel like 🤮

Thanks for the hug Anna, but what do you mean with rooting?
The adults are all female. But I have to wait a couple of weeks to know if I have cockerels amongst the chicks. If the color of the wings indicates the gender, I have 1 or 2 cockerels. But I can’t find info on sexing young chicks with bantam RIR. So maybe its just a chicken with a lighter color.
