Yes, I hoped so too. But I think it depends on the breed too. And I had no idea how these bantam RIR develop. Couldn’t find any pics on BYC of bantam Rhode Island red chicks between 4 and 16 weeks.

Only my Kwik chick has a red comb.

This name suits him well. He is the quickest of the three chicks.

But I’m in doubt about the others now. They got their names when we presumed they would be male. And I don’t like Kwek and Kwak for the two girls very much.

Broody 3 gave up the next day, as I expected. She had been faffing around, even before the others went broody, sitting on eggs then leaving them go cold. But broody 2 took over all her eggs and her spot. Good, because hers was messed up with the broken egg. So now things have calmed down, and the other two broodies are very serious about becoming mothers, it just waiting now to see what hatches.

How about Kweka and Kwaka?

Some sad news here too. :hitI heard a disturbing but not loud noise this morning from my chickens , short after sunrise.
I went outside to see what was going on.

There was a fox in the run! The auto pop door had opened. But most chickens where still in the coop. My pyle Dutch lay dead in the run.
I opened up the doors to give the chickens the opportunity to escape and went in the run to chase the fox out. Probably saved a chick that was in the run. But sadly one female chick is missing. So glad I woke and went out to see why the chickens made unusual noises.

No digging marks. No holes in the hwc and netting. A tight and strong net above/behind the coop, blocking predators to get in , loosened up. The tension wire was broken (weathered after 5 years?) Anyway the fox probably came in that way. So there is some work to do.

For now we put some loose hwc with stones on the coop against the run to block another easy visit. I also hope the fox panicked so much trying to get out through the netted roof ( but couldn’t) that he doesn’t want to visit my chickens again. 🦊

Sorry for you’re losses too of course. Well I do think the chick is dead for sure. I let the chickens free range a while. The broodies and chicks formed a group again after the fox went away. A group of 4 not 5.

Maybe this chick has been eaten. Maybe her body is hidden somewhere in the jungle I created in the run. The bushes and old garden furniture make a nice place for chickens to explore, but hard to find a chick in camouflage colour. I will look again later. Now I try to grab an extra hour of sleep. This night was too short.
