Welcome @DutchChickMom to the fun! We are a fun loving group, sharing the adventures of our chickens. Please feel free to join in the fun.

Everyone stay safe and healthy! The end is near or I so hope! D1 and D2 are starting to get on each others nerves. Well at least my hens are still friendly to each other. Yesterday, I converted 2 glass shelves from an old refrigerator in to new window for the new coop. Due to the weather (rain) I was unable to install them, so hopefully today will be better!
Enjoy your weekend!

Hi everyone...
well, the insurance said no to paying for the window. So plexiglass it is. Just got to figure out where to buy it....
Fridge shelves? Cool idea! Talk about recycling!

I can imagine that the kids are taking it very hard! It's already taxing on adults. Believe me! I am so happy I have my chickens. I just get in the car and drive there... spend a lot of time at the coop... they say I am checking on the chicks... but honestly I think I might just try to get out of the house.

Thank you all for the welcome.

Ha, nog een Nederlander. Welkom op dit forum @DutchChickMom .

Are you real Dutch or sort of Dutch? And what kind of chickens do you have? How many?📷

Yup, real 😂 Dutch, province Zeeland . Our flock is still in the making;
- 4 exchequer Leghorn (needs to be brought down to 2 definite hens eventually) of 5,5 weeks
- 5 Serama A-class (lost 2) of about 2 weeks, another group of a different breder will follow shortly
- 1 Ayam Cemani of about 2 weeks, ( s)he was the only one among the serama's, so took it along

Pics are in my photo-topic; Our adventures at Chateau Plumeau

My 8 week olds got their ID rings today... most of them. All the hens got them. Can't really see their combs very much for the most part. And you can sell them better when they got their rings. 4 roosters didn't get rings. Their combs were a no-go. Some with a ?... but they got rings. Still learning... I can't afford to not put a ring a good animal.

Hope all is well with you guys and your chickens.

Did I ever mention that I'm missing a hen chick? Last time they got larger colored rings (just for me to keep them apart) they were all there. I seperated roosters and hens at that point. Moved the hens to a different coop with a different run. When I did the ID rings I counted after we were done and I was missing one hen. I never found a dead body... or pieces... feathers. No others birds are missing. A fox would have killed more than just one little bird. So would a marten. It just didn't add up.
Well, today I was talking with a couple of other breeders and one guy mentioned that there are lots of ravens flying around. How smart they are... he even saw some ravens (at a different time) that feed chicks with corn at the fence just to be able to grab them. I guess this is what happened... a raven was able to get one thru the fence. That's why only one is missing... because they couldn't get to the others.
I can't change it... no crying over spilled milk.

And I sold some little chicks for someone who wants to make "Stubenküken" Sorry... not sure how to translate that. Just some very young and small chickens. I don't want to use them in breeding or show... they are either to small... or have other issues. On one hand it sadens me... they are so little and young still. On the other hand, I need the space. The chicks are getting bigger and need space so they can grow properly. Seems like I need to grow some callous to be a breeder.

@abpatchy so sorry to hear this. Yes ravens are very smart and cunning! And they learn from one another.

Well, the new coop is moving rather slowly, but steady. Was hoping on being finished up on Saturday, but I now have to drive my son to get a piece for his forging shop he is building. I said "yes" before I knew it was a 2 hour drive one way! So there went 5 hours of Saturday! But I DID buy an automatic door opener for the coop! A guy at my firm is rewiring it for solar power as well as battery. So no more getting up on those cold rainy mornings!
