When they're little chicks, they will often stretch their legs out and then wings, and they'll sleep on their stomachs. I think they're adorable when they do that. The look so comfortable.
My daughter calls it Chick Ballet (she does Scooter Ballet on her scooter in much the same way)! When I hold them, I lay them on their backs and rub their tummies, and they stretch both legs out and fall asleep--it's a riot!
Speaking of sleping on their stomacs, nobody told me about that, I came down to the brooder the 2nd morning to find them all asleep and I thought "I've killed them all" they looked so lifeless. One nudge of the box and all was well in my world again. Boy, am I easy.
Haha! I did the same thing this morning. We just got our chicks yesterday and they were sprawled out in their brooder. I thought the same thing you did, but they perked right up when I put my hand in.
All but one, that is. He was especially small and just didn't thrive. I tried hand feeding/watering him for a couple hours, but he didn't make it.
Just wait, when they're adults they'll make your heart skip a beat when you go outside to see them sprawled out flat in the dirt. Only to realize they've been dust-bathing and have put themselves into self-induced bliss.
