Pekin and Silkie Treats?

Hello,

My 3 pekin bantam hens and 2 silkie chicks (3 weeks old) LOVE dried mealworms. I also recently managed to grow cucamelons for the first time (the look like grape sized watermelons and taste like limey cucumbers). I was very excited about finally getting to try them but it seems the chooks love them! They pick them off the plant before I can get to them and go crazy chasing and eating them.

I've tried them with cucumbers, carrots, old cake, bread, yoghurt, and sunflower seeds and they turn their beaks up at all of them.

Does anyone have pekins and silkies? Is there any treats I can get them that aren't mealworms and that will let me try my cucamelons?!

I want to avoid raisins and grapes as I have dogs that'll eat anything and don't want to risk it. Any ideas?

Thanks :)

Young birds without a mom chicken to show them what to eat aren't as adventurous as ones you raise as far as trying different foods. Yours are pretty young yet and will try most stuff as they get older.

At 3 weeks I generally just feed mine the chick starter and than a daily treat of scrambled eggs. Once they taste them they go nuts for them and they make them grow like weeds. After about 8-12 weeks chicks are more willing to sample other stuff.

The pekin mums are very unadventurous unfortunately
so maybe the chicks are learning from them.

The chicks love their daily scrambled eggs! They are on crumb and an egg a day mostly, with the occasional mealworm stolen cucamelon.
