Pekin Duck Club!

I have 2 Peking ducklings I brought home yesterday. They are doing fine but I noticed tonight that one has scratched an area of her neck open. Can you please tell me why you think this is happening and what you think I should do to help her. I was wondering if they could have lice from the Feedmill they came from . Thanks so much !!

Put some Neosporin on the starch & keep an eye on it. Make sure the other duckling doesn't pick at it either...Of course keep it clean. Being that they are small you would probably be able to see if they have mites. It could be that she was a nervous Nelly... Just keep an eye on her. She/he should be OK tho!

I sevendust my big ducks & their housing area/run... I haven't had any problems with fleas/mites/ticks.... But I think the ducklings may be too small just yet.--but for the future, works like a charm!

Help! I've not been on in a while...but this morning one of my pekin ladies was dead in the hutch. We had two.... Thee was no visible trauma, no signs of illness, was eating, drinking, swimming like normal. She had stopped laying over the winter for a while but did not appear egg bound. She was simply gone. Has this happened to anyone else? She just turned two years. My other also seems just fine.

My 5-6 week old Pekins are moving today from indoors to a duck house, include a small pond! It is still lows in the 40s and 50s here. Do I need to put a heat lamp inside the run at night? Is that too dangerous? Will it do them any good if I plugged it in near the window in the duck house? They seem to have over half their feathers in, so I am not too worried, but still concerned as their duck mama.

I would not put 6 week old ducklings in with a pond. They are not fully feathered and drowning and hypothermia is a big risk.

At 6 weeks they need to be around (90 minus 6 times 5 = 60F). Heat lamps and flammable bedding can also pose a risk.

I found a very safe place to hook up a heat lamp, and for the next two nights it's going to be 60°. I think we will be OK. I just can't have them in the house anymore. We don't have the space. Thank you so much for the advice. The pond is not even deep enough to worry about. In fact, I'm going to build an extra run to hook to the duck house with a toddler pool in it.
