Pekin Duck Club!

I think it's safe to say "Aflac" is a drake. He now has one curled tail feather, and has been actively trying to mount his favorite of the "Three Musketeers" (White Crested) for a couple of days now.

We are at a crossroads...should we continue with a drake in our flock & find a way to hatch any fertilized eggs (and sell the babies), cull the drake and have my first duck dinner...or sell the drake and try to maintain an all female flock. Any suggestions, experience?

@Amiga @Cassie Collins the thing I like the most about these is that removable flooring thing that allows for easy cleanup. I wouldn't know how to build that in my own and none of the single story ones have it :'(

If it is not reeking I would not worry. At the same time, I don't use any shavings that reek of pine. I let it gas off outside before using it in the night pen. I use it when it smells mildly of pine.

From my understanding pine shavings or the oil are not toxic, it sounds like you might be talking about cedar shavings which are toxic and I believe will cause respiratory issues.

My 2 Pekins are now a month old and doing very well. I had to move them from their brooder because they out grew it. They seem to have adjusted well to their outdoor living space and duck house. My question is when can I introduce them to a large swimming area and free range in the yard? only thing about free range I'm worried about is not being able to get them to go back to their enclosure. any suggestions.

Make sure that she also has a bucket to wash her head in. I would add a splash of APple Cider Vinegar to the water. Keep doing what you're doing, hope it improves!

They have a kiddie pool so I'm thinking I will he out their winter pool (one of those smaller rubber feed pans) for her to dunk her head in since it's easier to keep clean and add apple cider viniger. Thanks for the tip :)

I feel that anything that burns my nose and catches in my throat may not be the best for the ducks, whose little nares are right near the bedding all night.

help! My pekins are outgrowing their brooder in a hurry, it's time to go outside...what do I use for bedding in the run? I use wood shavings in the brooder, but they make a quick wet mess out of that! Also, I have been giving them water twice a day as they waste a lot of it... what is the best water set up for them? Thanks guys!

How secure is the outside shelter? What will the night temperature be? How old are the ducklings?

What I use are wood shavings outside in their coop just add a few hand fulls here and there, for water I found out that if u get a large bucket or pan that they cant slip in and swim, that keeps the mess down and for the run maybe put some pea gravel down to stop it from getting so muddy. Hope this helps

My Pekin has a nasty looking eye. I think it's just infected for some reason but not 100% sure. We rinsed it in saline solution and dabbed some Vetericyn Ophthalmic Eye Gel on it. It looks way worse tonight than it did this morning.

Is there anything else I should be doing for her?

I think i'd go to the feed store and get some Terramycin [probably spelled wrong] eye salve and start using it, treat at night and take food and water away over night so the salve stays in the eye and she doesn't wash it out. How about the Veterycin are you using it at night too? That does not look good and needs immediate attention.
