Pekin Duck Club!

So glad I found this group!! I just posted a question in the duck forum about our Pekins. Looking for advice on keeping Pekins cool enough in very warm climates (south Florida warm). We also have 4 chickens that they love to be with, but tonight, we put the ducks on the patio out of concern for the warm weather. They usually sleep in the coop with the chickens, but with the temps rising, we know this won't work. Looking at reinforcing their run so they can stay out at night more safely. Maybe buy an outdoor fan too?? Hot weather ideas are welcome. Thanks!!

Getting 10 pekin ducklings at the post office tomorrow morning! For a first timer, any advice?
I think earlyredrooster was indulging in a bit of exaggeration.

Welcome to the duck forum.

Yes, we have compiled some advice here

and I have found much of the odor and mess comes from not figuring out water management. I raised eleven runners in the house for three months. Not one day of unpleasant odors in the house. I needed to keep up with brooder maintenance, but it got done.

Take a look at these ideas.

:( I think one of the chickens pecked her today. It was almost completely healed to. Poor girl :(

I got all the blood cleaned off and flushed it with saline and dabbed on some more eye medication. Eye looks intact but it's all scabby around the edges. Might have to rig up a separate pen for her and the other duck so she can be away from the chickens until she heals

I wonder if you can give them a shallow pan they can easily step into and out of for cooling off.  The concern is that ducklings - not fully feathered and oiled up - are at more risk of drowning.

Their down is like sponges. When mine played in water & got soaked they seemed to double in weight :(. It took a long time for them to dry.

Ouch! that is to bad. I dislike chickens for that, i don't house mine with anybody but their own kind.. the standards do free range, the ducks provide a wide distance.. they dislike their tendencies to peck. I would definitely not leave her with chickens and that bloody/injured eye, they go after each other when injured let alone a duck.
