Hi all am pretty new to ducks... have had chickens for ages... so I have two pekin ducks now about 8 weeks old. I have them in the chicken yard behind a dog ex pen with a duck house and pool. They have enough space but I ahve not given them free run of the duck yard or out into the backyard where I allow the chickens to free range simply because I am concerned about them coming back so that I can put them up at night... they don't seem to be going into their house at night on their own at an hour that I consider to be a decent hour as we live in the woods and I am concerned about predators...

So how did you teach your ducklings to a) come back to their area when necessary.... b) go to their house at night...

my guys don't seem to have that instinct that the chickens do to go in at night... and I am a bit concerned about chasing them (I am in a leg cast right now)

I would appreciate any insight you mgiht be able to offer... my friends ducks who she got at the same time as I got mine are out roaming her lawn and just waddle their way back at night and I am not sure how she gets them to do that.

thanks

Try a feeding schedule...ducks are piggies. Feed them in the morning, then let them roam and eat from nature then feed again at night. They will come back to eat. Get them on a feeding schedule before trying this though. Shake the food before feeding them so they know the sound of food. Then when you want them in at night shake the food and they should come.

thank you so much... I have some constraints here as the area they free range is in the dog yard... and they can't be out there when the dogs are out there ... most of the dogs would leave them alone but I am pretty sure a certain Irish Wolfhound would like to supplemet her diet with duck... and the area they are in, the chicken yard does not have alot of grass and bugs... however, they LOVE mealworms .... and my chickens come running for mealworms all I have to do is shake the mealworm container and they come running... I would imagine that the ducks would be the same if they learned the sound of the mealworm container.... whaddya think???

Should do the trick, might take a little time. Just always shake it before giving them any.

Hello all! New pekin duck mommy here. Went to farm to get our cayuga/pekin drake a wife and came home with his wife, pure Cayuga, and a bonded pair of 2 yr old pekins. She sold us them as a breeding pair. What should I know about pekin? She told me 1 female per male is fine, contrary to everything I have read. Will a pecking order take place as does with chickens? I cannot free range but there is a coop and pond in their run. What do the ladies like to lay their eggs in?
