Pekin Duck Club!

My pekin ducklings are a lil over a week. The camera on my tablet is broke or I'd post pictures. They area in the house still. I'm waiting till next week to move them to their own room. CAn I let them swim in my tub? My husband and me were told that all ducks have cellamanella so he won't let me have them wander on the floor or in the tub or anything BC I have a 2 yr old daughter. They are clean, my house is clean. I believe they are fine, they have never even been outside, what do I do? What's fact and what are myths? I love them. Charlie and JoJo, BC I don't know their sex and those names can be a boy or girl, lol! Someone respond plzm

Ducks can spread salmonella through poo but basic cleaning and hygiene will prevent it. They can be tested to see if they are carriers by veterinarians but i've heard the cost can be kinda high. With kids especially just make sure you wash hands with antibacterial soap after handling they duckies or cleaning their brooder. As long as no one sticks their hands in their mouths after handling and gets them washed promptly there shouldn't be a problem.

I started my pekins out swimming for short periods in a paint tray. When they out grew that I let them swim in the bath tub and just sprayed it down with a disinfecting cleanser and rinsed it really good after their baths. My tub was cleaner with the ducks swimming in it every day lol.

Have fun with them! Pekins are lots of fun!

Hello and welcome!

While birds and reptiles can carry salmonella, I have never heard that they all have it. It is a bacterium, and just like staph, it's around - especially in unhealthy places. So saying that all ducks have salmonella is something like saying that all people have strep throat.

I live up close with my ducks, and family members who are toddlers have hand fed and petted them. No health problems. As with any animal, one makes sure the little humans wash up before eating - which generally means right after handling the animals (because little humans put their hands in the mouths so much).

If you want to be 100% sure as soon as possible, I believe a vet can have a fecal test done to look for that bacterium.

Honestly I just think the dog has a skin condition and there isn't bugs getting the other dogs that are here...

Hmmm... Skin conditions are VERY common in dogs. I was a veterinary assistant before having my son. It was the most common problem we saw. Many different things can cause it. Allergies being the #1 cause. It could be environmental allergies, such as trees or grasses. Do you have them on flea preventative? Some dogs are highly allergic to flea bites and just one bite can make them break out and scratch themselves raw. It could be a type of mange (mites). Most mites however are species specific and will only live on one type of animal (for example mites that live on dogs are not contagious to humans, only other dogs). And there is a mite dogs can get that aren't contagious at all. There's a lot of different things it could be lol! Do you have any pics of the dog? I might be able to give you a little more info if I was able to see what the dog and the skin look like. If you're interested anyway.

I have 4 Pekin ducks that are almost a year old. When they were younger they loved swimming in my pond. When it froze over this past winter they tried to walk on it and they started to fall through and seemed terrified. Now it's getting warmer outside but they won't go in. I'm worried they are traumatised and won't swim anymore. Is this normal? How can I get them to swim again?

I'm not speaking from experience, but maybe you can try a kiddie pool and see if they want to swim in that? Gradually move it closer and closer to the pond. Hopefully they'll eventually switch to the pond on their own. If not take the kiddie pool away for a couple of days. I'm not sure if it will work but that's what I would try.

Aside from the ice episode, might there be something else there that tells them they are in danger? Snapping turtle, shoreside predators, hawks?

Ponds are not always the safest places for ducks. Especially domestic ducks.

So I'm thinking one of my ducks is definitely a girl. She's a little over 3 weeks old and is occasionally making a low honk sound. Would this be indicative of a female over a male?

My ducklings are growing fast. So I moved them out of my living room lol! And now they have a brooder twice the size and are in their own room. I saw pics from Yorkshire's links and have their food n water separate so its easier to clean but they stay right in that box. I'm a little worried, why would they want to be laying in the only part that is wet? I tried putting them in s baby tub to swim n they hated it! JM so confused!
