Pekin Duck Club!

My poor sweet Saffron wants babies so bad. Her eggs haven't been fertile but we have a now mature male so fingers crossed she can get her wish!

:love   OH...look at that face!  I just want to give her smoochies all over her bill & cheeks & forehead.  LOL

Is she a Pekin?

Thanks. :) yes, she is. She is such a sweet girl but oh my that little sweetie can bite when I try to take her non fertile eggs! I have to wear gloves or she breaks the skin! She just wants to be a momma! :) She was in the pool with my drake, Squacky, yesterday and he was feeling frisky. :)

Thanks.

What a precious family you have! I'm impressed with Saffron. Pekins generally aren't the motherly type.

Oh wow I didn't know that! She has been psycho broody (is it called broody with ducks?) and I can't make her stop! I guess I should consider myself lucky instead of grumbling about it! Lol

LOL...yes, it is broody for ducks, too. I researched breeds before I got my 4. One of my primary considerations was I didn't want ducks that tended towards being very motherly. So I ended up with Pekins & Rouens. I figured, as much as I love them, if I started hatching, I'd never stop. I'll be a goner if any of my 3 girls go broody on me. Not sure I'll have the heart to take the eggs away.

Thanks for responding and offering to help. I read in some other posts about similar issues and saw that Niacin was a common treatment so I went to my feed store today and the man didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. The brand of food they eat is Masterfeed, and I have never added anything to it. I let the ducks roam around sometimes so they eat grass and leaves regularly. I also give them peas in their pool sometimes. There were a couple of ducks that had trouble walking since birth but nothing serious and since this is my first time raising ducks I don't know what is normal and what is not. I just got back from a 2 week holiday and a neighbour was looking after the ducks. I knew this one was walking different before I left, but I seem to notice it more now. This duck also stays distant from the group, although will follow. This has gotten worse while I was on my holiday. The neighbour caring for the ducks asked if I had noticed other ducks picking on this duck before I left and I hadn't but she said she saw it lots. Sure enough today when i was out there with them, there was another duck pecking and pulling at it. As far as how the feet look, they are a little turned in, but what I notice more is that it walks upright while the other ducks tend to walk lower, if that makes any sense. I took a video but I can't find my camera cord at the moment. I will post it as soon as I find it.

Were you able to find Niacin? If the food you're giving them doesn't have it, they need it added to their food. Brewers yeast contains Niacin. There are other sources as well, but I use Brewers yeast in powder form. I add one tablespoon per cup of food. I order mine on Amazon.

I can't really picture how the duck is walking more upright. LOL...hopefully you can get the video posted. You should also separate the duck since its getting picked on. How many ducks do you have? Ideally, the duck getting picked on could be put in a separate area with one buddy that's nice.
