Pekin Duck Club!

LOL. I'm sorry to laugh since I'm with you on not wanting something like that, but it put a funny image in my mind of getting up in the middle of the night to find ducks roosting on all the high places in my house. That wouldn't happen with mine even if they were house ducks not put away for the night, but I can see a Muscovy deciding to roost on top of a bookcase.

Lol, I think its hilarious but my husband would end up killing them or me! Lol what's your opinion on what I should do?

That was what I was wondering about. The lady I'm getting them from says they really don't fly a lot but they like to perch on things. The more I've been thinking about it the more I'm thinking maybe Muscovy s are not what I should get. I let JoJo run freely outside, no worries, that wouldn't work with them, would, it? And his pen inside, well I say his room, isn't closed in, he isn't caged in at all, he could wander the whole house at any time but he don't. He's such a good boy! My husband would freak if he woke IP in the morning and one duck was on the counter, the other on the kitchen table, and poo everywhere!!!!

. Ahhh! Decisions, decisions! It I want them so bad, they are so beautiful! I would email u pics bc I can't transfer them on here but I can forward the email. What's your opinion? What should I do? Get them, or keep searching?
duckies1230 I have to be honest with you, I can't recommend any ducks when you have no way to keep them safe. To me fencing is the only way to make sure a stray dog or wandering coyote of fox or raccoon doesn't get to them, and at night they would need secure housing. I know this is still no guarantee something won't come over or under the fence but it does help and especially at night. You may say oh nothing like those have ever come through here but you know what there is always the first time for anything. You'd have to make some kind of arrangements inside too because it is funny but what your saying probably would happen waking up to a duck roosting on the back of a chair or up on top of the frig. Hubby would not like that. When my Muscovy was staying inside he had an Xlarge dog crate he slept in over night. I'll place this decision making with you and others. Oh don't get me wrong I'd love to see JoJo with some girls of his own.

I really don't have an opinion other than to get something in the same weight class since Pekins are such large ducks. I wouldn't personally want Muscovy with Pekins because I like babies of our babies, but I've never gotten the impression you were interested in breeding beyond some babies from JoJo and whatever you get. I was surprised at the pics in the thread Miss Lydia posted of the hybrids. They were really gorgeous offspring, and nothing like I would have expected from a Muscovy / Mallard-derived ducks.

I have to go with Miss Lydia on the crate thing as well. When we have ducks in the house, they stay in a very large crate. Even though the Mallard-derived ducks roost on the ground, I wouldn't want a duck flying around in the dark and potentially injuring itself. With what I know of house ducks, which isn't really much, JoJo is unusual in voluntarily staying in a certain place. I think most wander wherever they choose to go. I know that's what ours do when they're in the house. They also fly in the house, but not a lot.

Jojo is very well behaved. I believe he's finally done grieving and now that its aslways me and him, he's a lot more friendly, let's me kiss and pet him. He likes me there but I don't think he wants to be a house duck, he dont wander but anywhere else we go, basement, outside, he's everywhere! Happy as can be. Yet my husband said he's basically quiet while I'm at work and as soon as I get home, he don't shut up!

That's why I'm really trying to get him a " duck" family, he needs it. But I want to make the right choices and he is happy with me so I'm in no rush. Lol but dang are those Muscovy girls perfect.

I'm so upset and angry right now, I can't think straight. While I was @ my daughters volleyball tournament my ducks were in the yard doing their thing waddling around eating bugs, when my neighbors German. Shepard attacked and killed one of my female ducks. My son came upon the attack and chased the dog off, after she dropped my duck on the ground. One of my females wedged herself between the house and the snowblower, so badly we had to get her unstuck. My Pekin and the other female tried to jump into my sons arms. I'm so upset

I am so sorry this happened. Did the dog jump the fence? How'd it get to your ducks? Poor things terrified.

I know. I don't really live in the country. My only concern ever has been this big black cat that lurks around and it has cross paths with my ducks a few times and was amazingly enough chased away. And the set up would be downstairs if jojo got friends which is contained. I realize JoJo is one of a kind and he wasn't always like this but its great. That's why I need to make sure I get the right companions for him!

My ducks were free ranging in my yard, which they did everyday. They were in my garden eating away when the dog got loose from its run. Which this not the first time, this dog got loose 2 months ago and went after my chickens.

My advice to you as a close acquaintance even if not what you'd call a 'friend' is that you don't want to overwhelm yourself with ducks right now. You've been expanding the number of ducks/drakes you're thinking of getting over the past few days, and you're letting this get the best of you. I say this in all kindness, darling. Scott and I were invited to go get some ducks from one of the best breeders in the country in October, and I told Scott just today, "Regardless whether we can get ducks from xyz person, we cannot do that until we sell most of the others." That was very, very hard for me, especially after just losing our top show duck, but sometimes I have to reign myself in and be pragmatic.

I would get one female, just one, and no other drakes. Just one other to keep JoJo company with something of his own species. See how that works out for you where you are now, and expand once you move if you decide to do that. A brand new duck is almost certainly not going to be as well-behaved as JoJo, and it will probably make you very glad you didn't get another 2-3 to deal with all at once.
