Pekin Duck Club!

So my mother in law found a duck around her. She lives in farm country. So she got me a yr old female pekin. I'll go pick it up this weekend, if we can't go then she will bring her down. So my search is over...I don't see how this could go wrong but I'm not getting over excited till she's here! I really wanted to go to hope haven farm and save a duck.
So get 2 one from your MIL and one from Duck Haven Farm. that will make JoJo happy and keep him from over mating either of them.

I was already thinking that.

Great minds think alike! I really do think 2 girls would be perfect for JoJo.

Always that possibility when you only have one duck with a drake that is why we always say the ratio should be at least 2 or more actually 3-4 would be ideal but at least 2. Drakes especially JoJo age are sexually driven which means they always are wanting to mate and can really beat up a female. to the point you'd have to keep them separated which would defeat your purpose in getting him a mate to begin with.   Drakes can live together fine but there can be sexual interaction among them too it all has to do with hormones.

Will have to keep an eye out for that, LJ isn't too bad at the minute and Mylo is very attached to him. Would there be jealousy problems if I introduced a new female?

Intros should always be done slowly this is actually a pretty good time of year for adding new females because most breeding will start slowing down in the fall But any time you bring in more ducks always place them side by side with your resident ducks that way they can meet and greet and get to know each other with out conflict. it may only take a few days but it could take longer depending on the ducks.

I'm briefly interrupting your regularly scheduled banter with the following news...

Please don't forget...deadline for "other poultry" calendar picture submissions is tomorrow. I know I've seen some wonderful pics on the duck threads that haven't been submitted yet...

I just have a couple of questions for my duck friends... Hazel has been laying for about 2 weeks now. All have had nice hard shells, and she's laid everyday with the exception of when she laid her first egg, she skipped a day. Yesterday she laid in her house in the morning like usual. Later I went out to the pen and noticed another egg on the ground. This one was soft. Today she hasn't laid yet. So I'm wondering if this is just normal for beginners.

Also she is looking pretty rough. My poor baby. She's missing some feathers on the back of her neck, which I know will happen. It's not raw, and barely noticeable. A few feathers by her eye as well. Again, not raw or anything and doesn't look infected either. Just a little bare spot. She also has a dirty spot just above her bill that will not wash off with her regular bathing. She is actively participating in mating. Head bobbing, not trying to get away, and patient with Henry who is very aggressive with me these days. Sigh... He bite me so hard it swelled this morning. I'm starting to think he needs another female. He's a hormonal stinker!

Hazel may need more calcium. Do you have oyster shell available for her? Poor girl sounds just like 2 of my girls. I think my drake plays favorites and he hasn't yet mastered positioning when he plays hop on top.

I'm glad you're such a good mama duck and keep a careful eye on them. I have heard of some boys mating a female to death.

Okay, I will have to get some oyster shells for her. Will it be okay for Henry to eat? I can't really make it so it's only available to her. I don't think it's to the point of over mating, at least not yet. I just feel so bad for her and I want my sweet Henry back. I'm just wondering if he's going to settle down soon. I have no clue how long their mating season is but Hazel and I need a break... lol

Our poor girls with their hormonal guys! :(
