Pekin Duck Club!

The whole pad of her foot is swollen. Before I leave for work I was going to soak in Epsom. I can't get the clear iodine till after work. What should I put on it before I wrap it then? Triple antibiotic ointment or veterycin spray?
Amiga has has so good results from the antibiotic salve so use that till you get the clear. I'd hold off on the Veterycin spray till you get out the plug since it's so expensive and works great on open wounds. Go ahead and pic up the antibiotic too. They aren't expensive and will last.
@casportpony can give you directions on dose.

@duckies1230 our Howard had bumblefoot. I ended up having to take him to the vet. They said to soak in Epsom salt for 20 min 2-3 times a day. It doesn't have to be a deep bath, just enough to cover the foot. Obviously make sure she doesn't drink it. Unfortunately in our case the bumble was right at the toe joint and ended up septic which he needed antibiotics for. Yours doesn't look anywhere near as bad as ours did.

My goodness, @duckies1230 , I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this. I'm kind of behind on BYC right now. Are things any better?

You've gotten great advice here, and I just wanted to add that, like others here, I am not a proponent of giving oral or injected antibiotics unless they're necessary. You never want to give them "just in case it might help." I grew up in an era where doctors would give a "just in case" antibiotic if you came into the office sneezing. We're paying the price for that now because many strains have become resistant to some of the "best" antibiotics.

Infections in the feet of ducks are most often cause by staph, and the drug of choice for that depending on the strain is still something in the penicillin class as far as I know. You don't know exactly what it is unless you have it cultured, which means a vet visit. A culture shows you what classes of drugs and what drugs within that class will be effective for your particular thing. That's why you can't just say, "Okay, this is something in the penicillin class, so it will work." You might be doing more harm than good if you're using something not effective for that particular infection but that would be for something in the future.

@casportpony

Kathy, would it be okay with you if I add some things to your thread to give people at least a basic idea how to tell what the class of various drugs is, like if you look at the generic name of a drug ends in "cillin," it's in the penicillin class? You can add that to the posts you're doing, but I'm thinking it would be helpful to have that kind of thing in one post that just shows how to at least identify the class of drug you're using.

The only thing I'm not sure about is for the first several days should I soak in ES and apply the clear iodine 2-3 times daily . or soak and apply once then wait several days, see if the scabs and plug come out and if not repeat and try again in several days. U know I'm a pain, I just want to do this right!

And I didn't skip a space, your names didn't turn blue and I'm not on my phone, I'm on my tablet

@duckies1230 You are not a pain, I think it's rotten that the @stuff is not working for you, and here are my thoughts on the iodine.

I keep going back to Haunted55's post - she soaked, put a few drops of iodine on, and then it took six days before she was able to work on the duck's foot. She soaked it again, and the bumbles came off.

When I'm on my tablet, there is an @ sign in the bar above the post - like where you can click to add an image

It's being caused either by the tablet you're using or by the keyboard you're using on the tablet. It worked from my iPad but not from my Note Pro, which is an Android tablet. That might be because I'm using an alternate keyboard, so I'd have to test that more.
