Pekin Duck Club!

I see your pools are sunk into the ground. Do you have anything in rhem to help them get out easier? Mine can't seem to get in and out yet.

No, I don't have anything in there to help them out. They just pop right out. I just gave them this a couple days ago and they can easily touch the bottom....

. They throw their chest up on the side and pop out....lol. I wanted to make sure they have something safe right now.

Quote: Aflac is VERY loud. I don't know if I'd say quack as much as honk. Daffy (my Swedish) is much quieter and hardly quacks at all. So would I assume that Aflac is a girl and Daffy a boy? Or does the difference only count when they are the same breed?

I'm wondering how much people are spending on food, if it's not to personal of a question? I have one duck whose main food is organic duck maintainer crumble from efowl. I buy it online (of course, hence name) for $40.00 for 10 lbs. and we go through that in about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Our yard isn't very big so there's not an abundance of things to get but he does forage, we buy night crawlers and he gets corn, peas, carrots, lettuce, fresh spinach, etc. every afternoon and and evening at dinner time. I can't find any duck food here in my feed and farm stores and I'm unsure about what chicken foods to feed. Can anyone give me any ideas that might be a little cost effective?

I have also noticed that I have not lost 1 plant to slugs or snails this year, we have no dandelions in the yard ( I reach through the fence to the neighbors to feed him some), and the vegitables are growing wonderfully with the compost (remembering the posts a while back).

Hm... that seems like a lot of food you are going through for 1 duck. Maybe it is because mine are still really young?

I have a 4 week old duck, 8week old duck, and 2, 10 week old chickens and I feed an organic crumble my local feed grain mill sells for $15.75 for 50lbs. They had a sell on it last month for $13.75 so I stalked up with a few extra bags then I usually do. Check around for local grain mills/ feed mills in the area!

Also with 4 birds I am only going through 7lbs of feed in 1 week. They have a 12ft x 12ft run they forage in.... they also get a meal (from the kitchen) about once a week but that is all...

I have 2, 8weeks old Pekin Ducks and they are on pellets now and Thank God the person who told me about them cuz it has cut down on the waste so much! I just purchased the 50 lb. bag for 14.95 at Paris Farmers Union about 45 min. from home. I just went threw crumble 25 lb bag for 13.95 at TSC since coming home. I found they made their feed bowl all wet and pasted up the food and would not touch it. Plus they would eat and then drink and wash their mouth and I would find 1/4" of muck in their water bowl just after 1 meal. I do feed them veggies and treats but I don't feed them meal worms cuz there are cheaper treats for them to eat. A can of peas goes for arnd 70-80 cents. Meal worms are very expensive! Unless you grow them. You say there no feed store close by but I would search online for a store as close as possible. I have to travel 45 minutes for a store other than TSC in my town (they don't have anything for ducks). Their crumble serves both chicken and ducks.
Try pellets, you will notice a slight savings, god I hope I never have to go the way you do! Whew!

I now have 6 Perkins and 3 welsh harlequins. So besides peppermint patty, Linus, Lucy and Woodstock , I now have 2 young ones. They are about 3 months old and are huge! I have named the male, pig pen and the female needs a name. I'm so happy with them.

Wow! The Pekin Duck Club has been as busy as I have! Took me a bit to catch up on all the posts!

When will Sam I am get feathers he is a week old and the chicks that are two days younger have feathers and he still has none.
Ducks feather in a lot slower than chickens...

When can I start giving Sam-I-Am treats and what types of treats should I start with?
I started giving mine peas as their first treat (frozen thawed) - just don't overdo the treats and make sure that they can get some grit if they are still in a brooder.

So it is confirmed, Peepers aka "Clarice" is not Clarice at all.... We have Peepers aka Howard.

Khaki and Pekin babies? Has anyone seen any or had any? lol... is it possible? Oh dear! Collecting eggs all day long will be my duty. My mom wants to have one though... if they do mate.

They got to swim in their big pool today!

Hmmm... don't know about Khaki/Pekin but I have my silkie hen sitting on 7 ducks eggs right now that are going to be Rouen/Pekin!

This is what I get for all my chickens and ducks... and I ferment it, which makes it last even longer. Even if you don't ferment, just wet it. There's no waste when you wet it down and it's organic/non-gmo which is what it sounds like you are wanting to do? You can check if there's a co-op drop in your area - no shipping! If you can find something local, you can easily feed an organic grower or flock raiser for chickens - you don't need a specific duck feed, in fact, most people just use chicken feed. Just add some extra niacin to his/her water once in a while if he/she doesn't have a lot of access to bugs, etc.

*They are currently out of stock but are due to have more in by next month's delivery time - it's about $33.

Flock Raiser for Chickens? I'm sure the 2 Feed and Farm stores in my town have that, I've seen it. Thank you so far for the input on the feed. It seems like 10 lbs of crumble is a lot in 3 weeks time for 1 duck, now I'm wondering if I have a heavy eater cause like I said we give a couple leaves of lettuce in the afternoon, a few big spoonsfulls of peas or carrots when we eat cause he thinks he needs to be eating too, and my fiancee has taken to buying him night crawlers to give when he gets home from work.
