Pekin Duck Club!

2 Questions here,

1. How do i fix a limping 1 month old duck? It decided to jump off a ramp and now it is limping. Help?

2. One of my ducks made a low growl nose like... a toad. Never heard it before, why?

Wow! The Pekin Duck Club has been as busy as I have! Took me a bit to catch up on all the posts!

Ducks feather in a lot slower than chickens...

I started giving mine peas as their first treat (frozen thawed) - just don't overdo the treats and make sure that they can get some grit if they are still in a brooder.

Hmmm... don't know about Khaki/Pekin but I have my silkie hen sitting on 7 ducks eggs right now that are going to be Rouen/Pekin!

This is what I get for all my chickens and ducks... and I ferment it, which makes it last even longer. Even if you don't ferment, just wet it. There's no waste when you wet it down and it's organic/non-gmo which is what it sounds like you are wanting to do? You can check if there's a co-op drop in your area - no shipping! If you can find something local, you can easily feed an organic grower or flock raiser for chickens - you don't need a specific duck feed, in fact, most people just use chicken feed. Just add some extra niacin to his/her water once in a while if he/she doesn't have a lot of access to bugs, etc.

*They are currently out of stock but are due to have more in by next month's delivery time - it's about $33.
I've heard a few people talking about "fermenting their feed" . I've always used crumble for my chickens and if I read this correctly you can feed this stuff to both. I'm 7+ weeks into the duck life. So all this (fermenting, ducks & BYC) is new to me, I've never heard anyone talk about this before.

The babies are fitting in quite well, still. Actually they are two of a kind who pretty much ignore anyone or anything going on around them unless a bowl of peas is involved.

They don't want to free range when I open the gate. They just sit in the pool so long I think one of them is stuck

When can I start giving Sam-I-Am treats and what types of treats should I start with?
Here's a link to a thread that is about treats and supplemen and at what age they can have what. Let us know what you with Sam-I-Am and what he likes. I haven't tried Soleil with everything yet so it willbe good to try something new

I'm loving all the pics!

I thought some of you with babies who are new to ducks might like to see a progression pic of my Pekin, Puddle.

Puddle at 2 days, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this! It's so crazy how fast they grow

...more of my 2 youngest Pekins.

Their pen will be a work in progress for quite some time. Going to keep making it bigger and better as I find a dime or two and gather rocks, logs, etc....

So it is confirmed, Peepers aka "Clarice" is not Clarice at all.... We have Peepers aka Howard.

Khaki and Pekin babies? Has anyone seen any or had any? lol... is it possible? Oh dear! Collecting eggs all day long will be my duty. My mom wants to have one though... if they do mate.

They got to swim in their big pool today!

Here are my little darlings at 3 weeks today. It is crazy how quickly they grow. They change from morning to night.

Gorgeous! What's your duckies name?
I'm wondering how much people are spending on food, if it's not to personal of a question? I have one duck whose main food is organic duck maintainer crumble from efowl. I buy it online (of course, hence name) for $40.00 for 10 lbs. and we go through that in about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. Our yard isn't very big so there's not an abundance of things to get but he does forage, we buy night crawlers and he gets corn, peas, carrots, lettuce, fresh spinach, etc. every afternoon and and evening at dinner time. I can't find any duck food here in my feed and farm stores and I'm unsure about what chicken foods to feed. Can anyone give me any ideas that might be a little cost effective?

I have also noticed that I have not lost 1 plant to slugs or snails this year, we have no dandelions in the yard ( I reach through the fence to the neighbors to feed him some), and the vegitables are growing wonderfully with the compost (remembering the posts a while back).
Wow that is pricey! I spend around $25 for 50lbs bag of organic pellet at a local feed store. I recommend checking out local feed stores, while they may not carry duck feed, chicken feed is just fine to give them.

I now have 6 Perkins and 3 welsh harlequins. So besides peppermint patty, Linus, Lucy and Woodstock , I now have 2 young ones. They are about 3 months old and are huge! I have named the male, pig pen and the female needs a name. I'm so happy with them.
Hah how fun! I love the Peanuts theme. I added Pig Pen to the list, just let me know you name the little girl <3

So Peepers being a boy isn't 100% yet... but I would say 98%. No drake feather yet (is there around an age these show up?) but I have been sexing by voice and hands down... the very low, raspy, quiet, quack instead of like my female duck who is loud and very demanding and clear as day.

Also yep, the feed I talked about earlier was a growing poultry feed. It has a touch lower protein then they all need right now but I do supplement and they get free range of outside bugs, ect.

Do any of you have a picture of Khaki's and Pekin's together? Full grown / adult? I am just curious at the size difference as I have an 8wk Khaki and 4wk Pekin and the pekin this week just took the lead for being the biggest! He's huge! lol

what a difference 3 weeks makes!
Cookie , Webber & Charlotte first at 3 weeks then Webber & Cookie and Bottom pic of Charlotte- all at 6.5 weeks!
They are all 5 lbs now! Like whoa! And they are only 6 weeks?!
When are they considered adults? Laying age?

Hah when I started this thread I had no idea who would be interested. I have my answer! We have over a hundred members :D Hah I see you were able to get closer to your duckies. That's good! Have you tried feeding them peas from your hand yet?

They are imprinted ;) I'm lucky that way . But ! I think the biggest tip is patience and time . The more time spent gently talking to them , coo'ing praising them. Smiling . Being happy and relaxed w them .. The better ! Offer treats too! My girls love PEAS and Romaine! ESP cut up and put In their pool . They liked feeder fish one time too lol . just talk lovingly and try try try ;)

On the feed question...we are on the flock raiser one for chickens and ducks...whatever the growth one is, I'm too lazy to go read the bag. We go through the big bag about every 3-4 weeks and that's with 4 chickens and 2 ducks.
