Pekin Duck Club!

Major breakthroughs on my Pekin ducklings not being scared of me any more!!! I'm happy! I felt so bad that they were so terrified! Now it's getting crazy how they attack me...

. I love it! Piggy and Pistachio are two weeks...and Pipsqueak is one week old now.

I haven't caught which one does it, but one of them does a some what long clear high-pitched single tone whistle when they hear me start talking to them on my way to them before they can see me and I can see them.....the other two do the little fast peeping sounds. They also go crazy and do little duckie dances and start running around all excited when I start saying "hi, duckies....hi, duckies" over and over in a real excited voice...what a hoot!....

Love all the pics - I miss mine being so little. They grow sooo fast! When Yangtze was little, I could call her name and pat my leg and she would hop up into my lap. So cute!!

Hi! Can I join? Just got back from Tractor Supply with my first 4 Pekins (first 4 ducks ever, in fact). I'm a seasoned chicken mama, but this is going to be a new adventure. I'll try to post pics later!

Can I start with a dumb question?
How soon/how can I tell whether I have drakes or hens?

I noticed even as babies my girls were much more vocal than my boys. As for really knowing, I guess around 14 weeks old (I think) the boys got their drake feather.

. Beautiful ducks! I know I'm going to miss these being small, but I'm really looking forward to having adults like yours in a way....being able to watch them free range around and watch them swim in my ponds! ...can't wait! I'd like my ones coming from the hatchery here soon to maybe stay small forever though...

. My little ones are even a lot tamer today than yesterday!...warms the heart!!!

Congrats!! They are soo much fun - there are a few things different than chickens, but if you are already a seasoned chicken mama, you'll do great!
As for drakes, I can't for sure remember how old they are when they start showing their curled tail feathers, but ours are now about 5 months and I think our Rouen drake has had his curly feathers for at least a month or so.

Edited to add... I could actually tell he was male by his quack long before the tail feathers.

Peas!!! Who would have thought? Bought a few bags and one of them is defrosting in my sink.(kids are going by and munching on them). I have 5 two week old Pekin ducklings that are growing like CRAZY!!! Bought them a slice of watermelon the other day...It was ALL over them!. Then it was time for a bath..then preening, then sleeping, then spewing water all over the brooder....Wonder what will happen with the peas...lol

OMG!!!!>>>PEAS!!!!! PEAS!!!!! It looked like they have not been fed in the past two weeks. I gave them some...then walked away...they literally tripped over themselves RUNNNG after me. Who knew? Well all of you knew! Thanks for the tip!! My daughter and I are in the family room with two very well behaved large dogs and 5 ducklings hanging out eating peas. The dogs are just laying there saying.."really..peas?" The ducks are getting all snuggly with the pooches. crazy!!! I would really love to keep all 5 of the ducklings...but I have a limit..well...maybe. I think I can only keep two, so anyone in NE OHIO...if you are interested PM me.(make sure you have frozen peas!)

Okay...so now I am at the grocery store and adding watermelon and frozen peas to the shopping list...lol. Anything else?

My Pekin, Puddle, at 2 days old and again at 4 weeks and 2 days old.

I knew she was growing fast but putting these pics together just... Wow. Imagine the growing pains they must have. Lol. You know it's got to hurt growing that fast.

(She looks all limp in the second pic. Lol. She was actually looking at something on the floor.)
