Thanks they finally went in it tonight after I turned the coop light off and opened the lid and shone my headlamp in. As soon as I shut the lid and took away their light they were right back out of it. I'm sure here soon they will start sleeping in there. It beats their current place to sleep, under the chicken roost! I already built them a roof under the roost so they weren't getting pooped on all night!

i do not own pekin ducks but if every thing goes to plan i will have three little ducklings this year hopefully one male and 2 females so i have a few thing i would like to ask about this breed
1. how do they get alone with other breeds like Muscovy and mallard
2. do they lay a lot of egg and does any one know how many a year they lay
3. are they nice and don't freak out when you come in to water and feed and let them out
4. do they go broody if they dont that is fine i have other ducks to hatch out ducklings
5. can they fly and how high
6. how old before they lay eggs
7. do they like to get on a perch at night
8. do they grow as fast as the mallard and Muscovy
9. how long do you wait before putting them in with your flock of ducks
10. at what age can you tell the sex

As for many others who asked those same questions already (and if you already have ducks even moreso) try to get a copy of "Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks". Very informative about pretty much all duck breeds and lots of good info, incl. eggs, hatching, size and temperament. A great book that even my "book-shy" boyfriend read front to back cover twice already and even got for another person too!

Yeah, that little boy has only gotten on top of her a couple times and done the deed properly. I don't know if he doesn't realize what he's supposed to do or if he's too fat and lazy or just has trouble getting up there. He just stands to her side, bobbing his head up and down doing his little courting dance and biting all over that little girls face and head! She just lays there, flattened out on the ground like a flounder, which is a description someone else has given about their female in this position, and waits for him to do his job, and he just never, ever accomplishes it. She always lays flat for me when I come out because she thinks I'm the Alpha bird around here. Lol, they're both strange in this area and don't quite understand what they should be doing and what it's for

i m having the same problem with my mallard it has been going on for awhile now i m just hope he will learn but the way it looks he isnt going to lol

Hello pekin ducks fans! So I need some opinions. I live in Indiana... And it's been crazy cold. Was -10 the other night. With at least -20-30 wind chill! Anyways, my girls have had a bath in forever!! All they have in their bucket of water they share with the chickens. They can reach their beaks in and sometimes get their head wet but I'm worried about them. Their feathers are looking terrible and brittle and yucky! Plus one ducks eye is starting to look a little sick plus! They are shivering all the time! I had a duck get attacked late fall, and she's looking better than the other one! Anyways, they are in a old shed, with 10 chickens, a heat lamp, and lots of shavings. Should I bring them inside for a bath?

If you can give them a bath in 40 to 50 degree (F) water outside, with some shavings or straw around to keep their wet feet from freezing to the ground, that may be helpful.

At the same time, if the feathers are not in great condition, they won't dry off as easily. You did write that you have a heat lamp. How warm does it get with the heat lamp?

While being warmer is good, getting too warm and too cold isn't, either.

I would be giving them some poultry vitamins. And saline or Vetericyn spray for the eye - what would bringing them inside be like? Into the house, or a larger barn?

Hi there. If the hose doesn't thaw enough during the day to do refills and changes then you may have to start the water bucket walk. Just cart some water in containers out there to give them enough to wet their heads. Bathing does initiate feather grooming and upkeep (necessary for good insulation) so their feathers will be looking bad if they are unable to do it. You could limit them to their coop if possible, put straw on the ground outside for them to lay on together.
In no way am I an expert... but I suppose you could bring them in for a quick dip. Just don't let them hang out too long or make the water too warm. The change in temps could lead to other problems. We have done this but we are no where close to -10. Think the coldest we have gotten so far is 12F at night. Our crazies still swim and play in the ice though. They think it is the best thing since watermelon.
