Pekin Duck Club!

OK I cracked the first egg open and no bullseye. I put the one from yesterday in her nest. Will she lay an egg every day? Or lay a certain number and take a break? How many eggs should she have in her nest? I can't let her sit on like 20 eggs? Sry I'm so dang clueless!

If they aren't fertile they aren't going to hatch anyway. I'd take all her eggs at least till you see them mating everyday it still can take a week or so, so just take the eggs eat them bake with them and Then in about a week crack open another and see what's there. She'll keep laying for a while then take a break . but she'll start back up again. And she may never go broody you just never know with Pekins. Spring is ideal time for ducklings

This morning when I went to let my 5 pekins out they didn't come out and they were making a lot of noise so I poked my head in to see what was up and one duck looked like she was sleeping. But that's so unusual because they're usually really excited to come out in the morning. Upon closer examination she was barely alive. She was shaking. His beak was down in the dirt. Her one eye was pussy and the fur on her neck was scruffy. I picked her up and wreaked get in a blanket. I was on my way to work so I didn't know what to do. I spent as much time petting her and comforting her as I could. Then I put her inside a dog kennel so the other ducks could be near but not bother her. My husband went home at lunch to check on her and she had passed. I don't know what happened but I'm thinking she might have been "beat up" by the 3 drakes. They've been pretty rough with the 2 females lately. Dis anyone have any other ideas. She seemed healthy up until this morning. I was shocked and am very sad.

My two are very messy, i spot clean the litter in the pen twice daily, and total change weekly. I wash down with hot vinegar water too. Feed and water sit on a flexible plastic water heater tray. I bought it after i was fed up with soaked bedding daily. It gas made a big diffence! I just wipe it out each morning.

Can you tell me what kind of flexible plastic water heater tray you have, and maybe post a picture of it? I've never been able to find anything like that I'm satisfied with, and I'd really like to find something with cold weather coming up.

Its a plain water heater tray. Got it at Home Depot. $11.00. They had rubbery plastic and metal, i choose the flexible to prevent injury. Really helps!

The guy who got her for me had to take all 4 ducks and then gave me one. I got the pekin, they are all different breeds, he was told they were all female, then started noticing one mating with the other 3. Of course there was one drake. He said he went at it with all of the girls for a week. So she could be fertile. I've only seen JoJo try once now I work everyday but I'm only at work 6 hrs max and my hubby comes home while I'm gone. So they are only totally alone for 2-4 hrs so I really don't think if they are mating, its not a constant occurrence. I don't have room for a whole flock of birds but I'll let it up to her. If she goes broody n has fertile eggs. Then its up to her! :idunno

Do you also have poultry grit in a separate dish? A little won't hurt him, but a lot wouldn't be good. Our drakes never seems to bother with the oyster shell.

Yes I got poultry grit too. I don't think he's eating a lot. I was hoping if he does eat a little that it wouldn't hurt. At the moment, they are seperated bc every time I check on them, they are doing the nasty, she doesn't seem to mind but, I don't want him over mating her. I keep hearing horror stories about Drakes killing the girls so I'm paranoid!

I would love to be added. I am also looking for a Pekin female as my lovely little girl just died and my male, Piotr, is very lonely. I live in San Francisco and I do hope that someone within the Bay Area might be able to offer me a Pekin female. Piotr is so lonely. I have a wonderful garden and very good care and food to offer. Anyone?
