Hey all,

We had a pekin who was a runt. He finally started growing, quickly. He has developed a niacin deficiency.. I’ve been giving him 1ML of vitamin B along with 5ML of vitamin B in their water religiously for 2 weeks.
He got better for just a few days but is now back to falling over while standing, and struggling.
We live for a week long vacation in one week.
Is our Mr. Wobbles suffering? I don’t want to do what i’d have to do… but I will if he’s suffering. He doesn’t move around with the others.. he stays in his house majority of the time. He comes out for his daily treat, and that’s about it.

Can someone help with advice of what I need to do? Can i save him? Do i need to put him down? I don’t want our duck sitter to have to deal with anything while we’re gone..

Pictures of Mr. Wobbles from day 1 of falling over, to a few days later 😔

He needs to get extra niacin every day. It takes a while for anything to recover from a deficiency. Hopefully he will be well enough for getting nutritional yeast by the time you go on your trip.

I have a rescued jumbo pekin drake that is now 9 weeks old. He had severe niacin deficiency in his third week of life that has resulted in bowed tibia bones in his legs. He is on durvet high level vit B compound, which I am now giving in his water. I make up half a gallon water with 8mls durvet. The drake and his slightly smaller clutch mate who also had niacin deficiency but has made a better recovery, get 2 cupsful of tge water as soon as they are out of the coop in the morning (having had no food or drink over night). They drink it all down with very little waste. They get another 2 cupsful late afternoon when I topped up their feed dish. Again they drink it down with very little waste. (They have access to clean water for washing and swimming all day.) They also get nutritional yeast 1 tablespoon for every cup of feed. Despite hobble binding and intensive swim therapy, my boy still had bowed legs, but his feet are in a better position and he nolonger trips over them. He is happy, lively and otherwise healthy. His clutch mate has taken over as the leader of the two and looks out for him when my other drakes get too close. They stay together when out in my back yard, and sleep together in a dog crate in my coop. Do not worry about your boy. Just ensure the duck minder knows to give him Vit B and let him swim frequently: a child's wading pool isnt deep enough. Mine were swimming in my bath until my husband said the ducklings had to go out into the coop. They now swim in a deep long tub that is my brooder: it just fits into my bath and so they are getting good swims in it
