Does anyone know what you end up with when you mix a Rouen drake with a Pekin duck? Do they look like one or the other or a mix? Does anyone have pictures? I have pure Rouen eggs and mixed eggs in the bator and wonder if i'll know the difference since the same drake fertilized all of them.

    Thanks for any info!

    Hi, Kelly,
I have a pekin hen & rouen drake and I hatched 9 eggs in my incubator. They look more like rouens with wierd white striping around the neck (developing/showing later in the drakes) and all have wierd white feathers around the colored rouen wing feathers. The weird white feathering is how I find my one full-rouen hen as she doesn't have those white feathers. I call them wierd because they look out of place/different coloring - they're not really wierd as in sticking out funny or anything. You can't tell which are female or male by looking at them until about 3 months old when the drake green head coloring shows up. The babies are substantially bigger than the rouen dad @ 3 months but smaller than the Pekin hen (but not by much.) The females are really loud like the Pekin (maybe even louder?) I don't have any closeup pictures, sorry.

The duck in the middle (above) is a rouen/pekin mix. She has beautiful white on her wings and is black, has some green sheen to her and a few spots of rouen colour too...it's very strange but she's quite sweet [IMG] This is what she looked like as a duckling (below, in the middle again...) My daughters called her Spot [IMG]

Wow, evansacres, thanks for posting the pictures. Your mix doesn't look anything like mine! That's surprising to me. I expected some variation but wasn't expecting such a drastic difference! Very interesting!

Some Rouen-Pekin crosses will retain the Rouen coloring and have very little or no white on them, but will have more of a Pekin shape.

I was prepared to sell all the ducklings this year, but we had decided that we would keep "Spot" because she was so different from the others. The whole family wanted to know what she would look like when she feathered out. Anyway, I'm glad that we did. Here's a closer picture of her a couple of weeks ago, it shows her colors better, but it doesn't show how gorgeous her wings are when she stretches out in the morning [IMG]

Thanks for posting the photos!! I have a 5 month old Pekin drake (almost certain because of the curly tail feather, no eggs, and I've seen him biting on back of chicken's neck), and a Rouen duckling (2 months old). I don't know if the Rouen is a boy or girl yet. Hopefully it's a girl, then I can have mutts like yours.

Also, I do believe the Rouen will go broody, because she was hatched by her "wild" mom.

Your Rouen-Pekin mix looks like a black Swedish.

Petduck - I replied to your private message but just to follow up on here too, so there is no confusion for anyone else..."Spot" is definitely a cross between Rouen/Pekin. I have no other ducks other then Rouen/Pekin and she was hatched and raised by them here on our farm.
