I'm a little torn between the switchover on mine for a different reason. Has to do with with winter weather and that they might be cooped up for several weeks if the snow in their run gets too deep. Deep enough that 1) they won't go out on their own or, 2) deep enough after it drifts in on the south side of the coop where their run is, that they could hop -- not fly -- over the fence, so that I'll be keeping them in. (I have a tractor-mounted snowthrower that will not go into the run.) Their coop is plenty roomy for their number , even cooped-up. (I've dubbed it the Pullet Palace. A friend with even more palatial accommodations for his ladies calls his the Coop de Ville) but I've got an idea given that, in their nature, they've each got a certain amount of pecking that they need to get out of their systems each day, so that sticking with crumbles, at least over the winter, will account for/consume more of that urge just in taking their nourishment. Idea being that the crumbles will keep them busier than pellets during those times, and reduce whatever need they might feel to peck on each other during the winter. We'll see how it goes. I'm prepared to hang pie plates and other toys for them if pecking at each other should become a problem.
Apart from that, conventional wisdom seems to favor less waste with pellets, and if they'll take either readily (by transition or cold turkey) I plan on crumble for the months that they might stay indoors.
