Pellets

Thank you all for the advice. I’ll be going to Callaghan’s tomorrow since they’re closed today. I’ve got Leghorns (both genders & chicks) so helpful to know about the protein
Then I would choose a flock raiser or grower with 18-20% protein and about 1% calcium with oyster shell or whatever calcium choice you might have free choice on the side for layers. The young and the males will sample it but they won't consume too much of it all the time as they would in the case of "layer". Birds NOT in lay like chicks, broody's, boys *can* (does NOT mean will) develop kidney issues including a type of gout and even failure, if fed calcium levels above 3% for "long" periods of time. That is most likely to happen in birds that are prone to it genetically. Meaning predisposed for some reason.

Even an unmedicated starter could be used. Usually around 22% protein. Above 25 is probably too high and you end up with another type of gout and kidney issues in chickens at 30% +

Also, the purina flock raiser I buy (they make Nutrena too) may not be available in pellets any longer. Though my LFS does still carry pellets, another poster pointed out that their web site only shows crumbles available. I actually by the crumbles at another vendor for less. Maybe the LFS has old stock.

Again I use crumble because I have chicks most of the time. So if you have chicks you may consider that.
