Pencilled Turkeys

I'm sorry if I missed it, but how do you get the pencilling genetics? Is there a specific strain or variety which has it or does it show up when you start crossing varieties?

Usually you need to start with a pecilled or semi penciled type but sometimes you get lucky and some of your birds are hiding a pencil gene. That's what happened with me. I still don't know for sure who is hiding all the cool genes that popped up in my flock. I think mottled black's can hide the gene and royal palms can be pencilled.

Ok, thanks. :) I have feed store bronzes, blue slates, and a bourbon red. Probably won't find pencilling there, right?

Pencilling is a separate color mutation gene. It is only visible with a blackwing base, b1b1. It's even very hard to notice on a b1b split. No bronze, slates, or bourbons will be able to have visible pencilling.

Gotta have pictures on this thread of Mr. Fancy. He is just spectacular specimen!!! Tricolor pencil palm b1b1cgcgRrnnpnpn

But it is possible for those that are split to Black Winged Bronze (b1) such as a Bronze (bb1), a Bourbon Red (bb1 rr) or even a Barred Slate (Bb1 Dd) to carry a hidden semi penciled gene (Pnpn).

Absolutely! I just don't think it would be visually noticeable. Lots of test breedings to confirm!
