Pencilled Turkeys

So tell me....you Pencilled Pros....explain how to produce penciling. Do you have to breed Pencilled to Pencilled to produce pencilling? Is this a recessive gene?

I'd like to know this too since I'm getting penciled babies here and there and have no clue how lol. This is Mister's first year and I think he only came to maturity over the past 2-3 months. I know he wasn't the father of Phil and Lil (especially since he wasn't even around last year when I had Sprinkles hatch)

Aurora...dont forget...if Cuddles or Lil need a new home.....just saying!

You can keep on remiinding but you're not going to get my girls lol

Wow...Phil & Lil are just turning into stunning birds!! I've always love Misters coloring...but I'm still stuck on the darker colors. Still love Cuddles & Romeos colors too!

Penciled (pnpn) is a recessive gene but it is not completely recessive as you an get a partially penciled bird with only one copy of the gene. I believe that @TurkeyTimes mentioned something about needing the Black Winged Bronze (b1) gene with the penciled gene.

Yes, pencilling can only be expressed on b1b1 base. I'm not sure how much different the pencilling is expressed with even a split, b1b. I will be doing breedings next year to test. You have to have at least one Pnpn bird to produce pencilling. There is a huge assortment of quality in pencilling. There is a theory that pencilling might be a base modifier like b1b1 and not it's own gene at a separate locus. Time shall tell.

@Auroradream26 Mister is so pretty! He is definitely semi pn, b1b1cgcgDdRrnnPnpn. I have quite a few new tricolor blues this year and cant wait to see how they finally feather out. I think Phil and Lil might be pencilled FF, but their coloring is odd. Their markings are great tho! Can you get closer pics of wings especially near coverts and tips?

I think this one is a base pencilled blackwing bronze, b1b1pnpn. Much much darker in color than the other tiger bronze siblings so it's possible. I hope its a tom!!

Thank you! I thought maybe he was semi penciled but wasn't too sure until Phil and Lil grew up. I will most likely breed Mister to Lil to see what I get from them. I don't really want to do Phil to Lil since they have to be full siblings. Let me see what close ups I have already for now. These ones are from a month or so ago. I'll get better pictures, probably tonight since they like to be close and snuggle around bedtime.

I'm not positive which is which since these were a while ago but I THINK, the first one is Lil and the second two, Phil.

They are really well marked for pencilling. Maybe extended wing pics? Ends of secondaries is what I'd like to see now. Cant determine if they are cgcg or Ccg.

Mister over Lil will make some pretty babies. I try and avoid full sibling pairings as well, but sometimes you have to.

This is Pebbles, the hen that I believe to be Phil and Lil's mom. Not 100% positive on that either but she's a Narri cross, with what, I can't remember. What do you think? She hatched from random shipped eggs a couple years ago. Possible dads were Mottled black and bourbon red. I would like to breed Phil back to her to see what I get and possibly to my red bronze hen, Sweet Pea (bourbon red x wild turkey)

Very interesting. I don't see any pencilling in Pebbles nor do I think she has red nor would I guess she cam from a black.Mask at hatch? In my testing, to get the pencil quality of Phil and Lil you need to pair pnpn/pnpn or Pnpn/Pnpn at minimum.

They were white with little "Sprinkles" as someone put it before, down their backs. Here are Phil and Lil as babies. Don't mind the little red one.
