Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture agent @ local farmers market...

I think he should to if he is selling in to the food market. But I should have the right to go to farmer X an say "I want raw milk strait from a cow" an he should have the right to sell me what I want.

Mass sales an one on one farm sales are not the same thing.

I completely agree.

I think you should post a sign outside the farmer's market that says "Eat at your own risk" and then let people decide for themselves what preparation methods, which individual farmer and which products people want to buy for themselves.

I lacto-ferment foods.

You HAVE to leave them out for 1-3 days in order to get them to ferment. If I tried to do that in a restaurant I would be shut down. Never mind that lacto-fermenting not only preserves food, it releases more nutrition.

If you want to have raw milk rent the cow and milk it yourself taking the farmer out of the picture. Food needs to be safe. If you don't want to follow the rules to sell at a farmers market then sell off the farm. Can't have it both ways.

I was talking about off the farm.... But in many states farmers market sales are under the same laws as off the farm laws.

An I should not have to milk the cow my self to have fresh cows milk. I should have the right to buy it, off the farm.

A farm or a farmers market is not a grocery store. If you want the government in your food choices go to the grocery store an leave the people that want to buy raw/ungraded from a local source the right to do so.

"The Government" is made up of individual people, whether they are elected or "staff" or "bureaucrats." They all have their own interests and hobbies and passions and fears. There are a percentage who raise backyard chickens or have large vegetable gardens or are vegetarian or vegan or ...

The main reason conspiracy theories don't work is that they require people whose entire lives are devoted to a consuming, irrational "plan" to control "the masses" in some manner. Believe me, if you have ever been in a DC government office near quitting time, you would know that that is not the case. Are there ANY people with those irrational overwhelming passions? Of course--we typically call them sociopaths when they interact negatively with others, and eccentric when they do not.

No, they just happen to agree with their viewpoints. So do a LOT of people, since congressional members all won their elective seats. And while Supreme Court judges are appointed, they have to acquire approval from the senate--once again, elected officials.

I like that idea ^_^ Thats a good compromise!

Also, I think if we could free up regulations and get more people selling fruits and veggies at markets then more people would buy them. It's a win win situation! If more people bought fresh, wholesome food they would be MUCH more healthy. I think that the benefits would by far outweigh the negatives.

We have a farmers market of sorts...not like the big city but local farmers all sell on the side of the road. They all pay 100$ to rent a space for a year, which isn't too bad. But none of it is regulated and NO ONE has ever gotten sick. I'm going to have my son start selling our canned pickles up there soon so he can learn how free market works and so he can make a little cash. It's a very cheap healthy way to put food on the table that helps the farmers and us.

The CATO institute is a right wing think tank. Created to propagate propaganda. Need something better than that for a reference. Deregulation doesn't free up anything for the vast majority of the population. It just puts more money in the pockets of the wealthy and allows unscrupulous people to take advantage of those less fortunate. They need to free up money for small business owners. Not regulations. As with everything in life a middle of the road approach is best. Regulation can be good and it can also be bad. I'm all for food regulation. I'm all for packaging regulations, electrical and building standards. All sorts of stuff that involves safety that would be short cutted by most business owners to make a buck. So I count on Uncle Sam to do what he can. I know from experience that people will do anything to save a buck.

BTW Madhoff was used as an example of someone not caring about the market since the "Market will regulate itself " BS is so often used to defend deregulation. I wasn't using him as an example of regulation. Read it more carefully next time. Without laws and regulations though people like him would be much more common.

If someone doesn't like regulations they should maybe try out someplace like Haiti. They didn't have any building codes down there. No regulations at all. A capitalist dream. Of course when the earthquake hit there weren't too many people left that didn't get squished by buildings that weren't built to withstand anything.

I do agree with the thought that most of Congress and 5 out of 9 Supreme Court justices currently sitting on the bench are in the pockets of Fortune 500 companies.

Someone who compares Haiti to a "Capitalists dream" isn't even worth talking to. Ludicrous statements like that deserve no rebuttle. I love how you most likely didn't read the article and just ASSUMED its republican propoganda. I know this because you didn't dissprove facts, you tried character assination of the company that published the article. Sad, very sad.

So, we both agree that big business pays for regulations as stated here "I do agree with the thought that most of Congress and 5 out of 9 Supreme Court justices currently sitting on the bench are in the pockets of Fortune 500 companies" but you think that those SAME regulations are what saves the preverbial "little guy" from those same companies? HYPOCRITICAL

Bernie Madhoff can be used BOTH ways THATS my point! Thats why it is stupid to use him to propagate your view.

It's very very sad how people are so reliant on Government these days that they can't do ANYTHING for themselves anymore. Which brings us back to the original point instead of preventing E Coli by washing there hands/food and cooking it right, people want government to regulate it. We actually have a small farmers market in the small town I live in, none of its regulated OH MY! I buy MANY MANY UNREGULATED fruits and veggies and even those terribly diseased eggs! Anyways, not me or my family has EVER gotten sick or E Coli because we TRUST the farmers around here, we know most of them too.

I live somewhere that proves my point beyond anything that you can say. Texas is the biggest example of free market philosophy and capitalism at its best. Nearly as many jobs this year as all the states combined. We actually don't get breast fed by the Government down here. Or do you think all our regulation is why we thrive? I can assure you, we have the LEAST regulation of ANY state in regards to business (Including Union regulation).

You do have some funny perceptions. I'll give you that. You've been listening to Rick Perry I take it. Find some actual statistics from a neutral source and try to keep the personal opinions out of it. In other words don't source a far right organization or group. I don't think you can do it. There are too many variables. Your state sucks off the government teat just as much as any other state. Your Governor likes to grand stand a lot but he takes just as high of a percentage as everyone else does.

Why wouldn't Haiti be a capitalist dream? They have no regulation and a totally useless government. Sounds like a great place for a libertarian to live. No rules to follow.

Just an FYI...I am from Texas and we DO NOT claim Gov. Good Hair....as he is affectionately known. Funny Rick Perry story....each spring there is the State Track Meet where schools from all over the state compete for the state championship.....well one day Perry was there to hand out medals to the participants.......They introduced him and I have never heard such a raucous barrage of boos and cat calls in my life for a person. Mind you this stadium was filled to a great degree with Coaches and Educators from across the state also....he stopped handing out medals...haha.....

Ironic thing going on right now is that Perry called a Special Legislative session to try and fix school finance and other issues........but he is completely absent because he is out on a political junket to promote himself....
Sorry, just not a fan of him. My brothers and wife are all Aggies and they dont claim him either! haha...
