Its okay for them to have the red phenotype at birth. It doesn't mean they will have red leakage as adults. When you are breeding the black/blue/splash colors there is always underlying copies of red, silver, or gold. Chances are they could be roosters, keep track of them. The brown color usually means they are carrying silver (I think). My Silver Laced Wyandottes always have some brown on them, as do the Australorps, and Ameraucana. Mama you can't cull day olds for anything except deformities (IMO). You have to feed a lot of babies to gather a nice starter flock. I know because I feed about 500 this past year!

Oh no, don't get me wrong. I am in no hurry to cull. I have plans to do nothing but grow out this year. But, I was told this will just mean read leakage in the blacks, which I do not want.

Sorry y'all...indulge me for a second, it has been a while since I hatched!

2 splash

7 blacks

12 blues

6 silkies (the one in my son's hands is a wee bit older)

5 bantam langshans (bottom left and bottom right are the two from this hatch)

And just some cuteness.....

OK, I will try to stop now :)

Next eggs go in to lockdown on the 9th. Those are my eggers and 7 more silkies.

If you worm them with pumpkin, the eggs are safe. Otherwise, no. You cannot eat the eggs.
Anyone know if a dog/cat could eat the eggs?
I am in 'mid worm' so we are tossing the eggs to chickens which have NOT been wormed (and are NOT laying). I've read that it is not safe to toss the eggs back to the ones you're worming as they are just reingesting the meds.

Someone told me of the horrible experience of hatching eggs from a recently wormed flock. NOT a mistake I'd want to make.
