What do I get for answering?
Guess I won't get something for nothing here,,,,, never did answer,,, did you ? lol
my first thought when looking at this Roo was 'Cuckoo Marans'. Then I saw the leg color....I'm going with Cochin cross, does it have 5 toes? A nice looking boy none the less. And this was fun, we should play 'guess the breed ' more often. Great learning tool.
Only 2 Marans at the FS, a BC Marans boy and girl, not sure of age. I got pictures and can post if you'd like. Although the boy was lying down and so his type is a mystery to me. They looked ok, I didn't like the combs on either of them but they did not DQ. The boy's coloring was a bit uneven, too much straw in the hackles (same problem I'm having), and not enough copper on the girl.

A breeder who entered over 150 birds did not show up, that left a lot of empty cages. I thought I saw that there would be 6 Marans there, but there was only the 2, they both took 1st place.
Thanks Blarney,,, made it up to the farm show this evening,,,, didn't like the Roo at all ! Hen....average
Oh, is there a prize for answering the Marans question? You may send it right over.
Not you too ! you been hanging around with Missy ?
Hey Ray speaking of Marans......
I need to sell these Dec21st BCM peepers to make room for all the eggs I am going to be getting soon. Did you get replacement eggs for your last batch and incubate?
Let me know before I put an ad up for the lot! I would grow them out but I already have dark brahma, the blue marans and the OE's I am growing out.
Thanks for the offer Sally,,, but have a hatch going and ordered more eggs when you decided to keep them,,,,, pass 'em on to Mama

I noticed yesterday that most of the birds (chickens, ducks, and geese) were from the same few people. I kept seeing the same names over and over again. Is this how the farm show usually works? A few bring all of the birds?

I think it just reflects how few people show in the area at the moment, and especially how even fewer can and are willing to show at the farm show. It's not easy for someone to leave their birds there for an entire week and make sure they are taken care of,,,, by themselves or make arrangements for someone to do it for them.

Most poultry shows are just 2 or 3 days.

And, I'm sure it's hard on the birds,,, an entire week of stress !

Well, hope you all can bear with me while I do a little 'really cool moment' sharing...

We put cameras in the coop, one for general population and one on 'broody watch'... we figured out the motion sensor and record setups and finally tonight got the video I've been wanting to capture. Gracie doing her own broody hen temp and humidity control.

Watch her do her 'broody shuffle' at the end of the video...
