Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Thanks!  They were local, so hopefully they will be ok...  :he     I had everything programmed on this darn incubator, and now it keeps overriding the turner "off" setting.  This is what you get for "set it and forget it" machines.  It has, however, been keeping the temps and humidity dead on; which my cheapy one last year couldn't do.  I guess I can't have both.

i let shipped eggs sit, but i've put my own eggs straight into the bator. Temps and humidity, well, that's what counts most! Did you say what you're hatching and I missed it?

Welcome Bower!

I think it just reflects how few people show in the area at the moment, and especially how even fewer can and are willing to show at the farm show.  It's not easy for someone to leave their birds there for an entire week and  make sure they are taken care of,,,, by themselves or make arrangements for someone to do it for them.

Most poultry shows are just 2 or 3 days.

And, I'm sure it's hard on the birds,,, an entire week of stress !

I was going to show there, but what got me was the temperature change, I thought if they were INSIDE the farm complex for 9-10 days (coop in on Friday, pick up following Sunday) and then back outside when they got home that they would all molt. The live vaccine required was a bit of a put off as well.

They feed and water your birds for you.

Delmarva is looking like a pretty big local show. It's coming up in March and I am IN!!

Welcome aboard  Bower !!!    good to see another guy here........ Beware the estrogen levels around here  !     Shhhh !    they're watching...... right Chad !

You love all the attention, Ray.

I noticed yesterday that most of the birds (chickens, ducks, and geese) were from the same few people.  I kept seeing the same names over and over again.  Is this how the farm show usually works?  A few bring all of the birds?

I think alot of people stopped showing several years back when someone brought in sick birds and almost everyone had losses as a result of them not catching it before the show. I know they're much stricter now, but it's one of those once burned, twice shy things.

My poor birds would go insane...a week in a cage???

I know. When I saw the eggs, I knew I needed some chicks!!

I don't blame you!

Well, hope you all can bear with me while I do a little 'really cool moment' sharing...

We put cameras in the coop, one for general population and one on 'broody watch'... we figured out the motion sensor and record setups and finally tonight got the video I've been wanting to capture.   Gracie doing her own broody hen temp and humidity control.

Watch her do her 'broody shuffle' at the end of the video... :bun

this could be dangerous... I actually broke down and got a youtube account so I could post this video! I'm doomed!!!  :th

Awesome! Thanks!

Yep!!!! High levels of estrogen doesn't even begin to cover it!

The estrogen doesn't even begin to balance ya'lls.....

Cool...you going to the Maryland Small Flock Seminar?

I know why I have been up since 5. Why the heck is everyone else awake so early?

Cause I have an appointment to pick out my wedding dress today.

The people who show have this process they go thru to bring home the chickens from the FS had a lady from my area tell me she would share the info with me if I ever wanted to show there but man I don't know if I could leave my chickens with all those crazy people. Saw too many people be arrogant and nasty to birds and I love my birds too much :(

What is a good breed to start with in this part of the US? I have a trio of bantams, that I got from an auction I am calling my "practice chickens". Trying to decide what breed to start a flock with. Thank You

That depends on what you are wanting from your birds. Are you looking for meaties, eggs, good foragers, docile pet, show birds?
