Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Australorps weren't on my wish list but they are great looking birds. Let me see what dh says. So far I collected 3 silkie eggs for the bator. Hopefully they will lay again before I set them. It's been 2 weeks since our roo went MIA. I'm afraid the eggs won't be fertile for much longer. No problem about the eggs/chicks in Feb. just remind me when the time comes!

The chicken hoarder in me is having a hard time passing these up, it's 5 minutes from my house but I must remain strong! Lol http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/grd/3948679409.html

Free chicks are always tempting. I don't have the space for them right now either so no chicks for me either. Just let me know if you want the Australorp eggs, no big deal. I would love to give some to someone just to check the fertilization. Like I said, I would hatch some for myself but I just don't want any chicks right now. I really hope to put together a bigger, better coop this fall but money is so tight right now that I can't do it. I would try to use recycled materials, but the skill level is a little beyond what I am armed with. I will probably have to wait until spring.

We were swimming the one day and my 9 year old son asked why the rooster was wrestling the hen. I told him she was the current champion and he was trying to win the belt. Your answer was much better! Lol
Welcome! Allegheny county here :)
I will let you know about the trap. Last time I just made them a special meal. I was going to ask you if you wanted a silkie or two if I can gather enough eggs for the bator. If not I'm sure I will have a silkie rooster by feb. to get you some eggs. Just let me know!
The only reason I'm thinking it s not a coon is bc it had full access to the chickens (the coop door is open to the run in the summer and the hole is small. Not sure a coon could fit in it. The last time a coon got our chickens, it reached in through the chicken wire (before modifications were made) and ripped the heads and feet off of every chciken it got ahold of. I wish I had a camera I could set up :/ I hate the guessing game.

Guess what? It's raining again today. Good thing we are having a lazy day in our pjs anyway. Baking zucchini bread and doing some crafts with the kids. I'm trying not to order more eggs from eBay but I really, really want some. Ugh. 11 years of marriage might end over my hatching addiction! Lol.

If you have an iPhone or iPad there's an ap called isentry that you might be able to use to ID your trespasser. You just face your phones camera towards a scene and it records pictures if any of the pixels move, will save them to the phone or maybe even email it to you. The settings were kind of a pain to adjust but it does work, and way less expensive than buying an outdoor camera. I've never tried it at night, and if your chickens cross the screen you'll get lots of false alarms. I also guess there's a similar ap for android phones?

Gavin picked up two 1-wk old silkie crosses for free at 4H tonight. They better be pullets...

For those of you wondering about my free range broiler project, this rooster weighed 6 1/2 lbs at 4 months running free range every day. I fed 1 gallon of grower feed once per day to 24 birds, the rest of their feed had to be foraged for. I had to process him this evening because he got into a scuffle with an older rooster and the older rooster broke this one's neck.

I still have his full sister, if anyone of you want her for any of your projects I'll sell her for $15.

Only one made it to lock down unfortunatly but it is the sweetest and cutest thing! I have 0 experience with the breed so do you have any idea how and when you can tell sex? oh and it is a Marraduna. It keeps peeping and cheering the other two left to hatch on. They are working there way out now. A wellsummer and a crele pen. Hoping for all girls. :-D

There's a thread for basque hens under euskal oiloa. I got mine from a really terrific breeder in FL. They were 5 weeks & she was able to tell the sex by leg color and coloring. This breed likes to forage and loves treats. They can be greedy but are very friendly & curious. If you PM me a picture I can ask her to identify him/her. How did you come acquire the egg? May I ask how far you are from Harrisburg?

I don't know you but about skill level and tight budget...................I have been building my first ever coop with all recycled materials ( except for latches and screws) and with amateur carpentry skills and borrowed tools..................its hard and time consuming ( especially in a heat wave) but I do think its do-able........................I also know that if I did it again I would do a much simpler design....................but its doable for us amateurs on tight budgets!

point of lay tetra tints 6.00 each.
I have way to many chickens as it is.....but for any newbies this is a great deal, these birds are egg machines,,,,a nice size white egg daily,,,,mine lay all winter long no matter what the weather.....mine have been broodies and make great momma's...

You are absolutely right. It is doable bu I don't know if I have the time to put into it. I built my current coops but I'm not completely happy with them. I have enjoyed watching your progress but all he while I kept thinking you should hav scrapped the dresser and just built a coop from scratch. Lol. I am impressed with what I have seen of your project though! Nice job!

I agree. I have 2 tetra tints, though I just call them leghorns because its easier for family conversations. I swear they don't miss a day! If Bruce lived even remotely close to Westmoreland County, I would be all over that!
